[Albion] Pub landlord banned from football matches after Athens punch-up

In the late 80s / early 90s when I started going away it was easy to split “types” of football fans. On the trains or in a mini bus or private coach you got pissed and did pretty much what you wanted. On the club coach it was much more sober and safer.

But with standing and 200 of us in a 2000 place away end you could be with who you want. Much easier.

With loyalty points, ID checks, sell outs at T2, allocated seating etc getting “similar” people together is impossible.

It’s very annoying for older, more sober fans to have pissed up idiots steal their seat. But football is also supposed to be fun and one of the last places working class lads can let off steam. A bit more understanding of that is also needed. Like the quoted post says it’s been going on forever. I’ve got smashed at away games and was probably annoying as f***. We’ve all done it,
Indeed, you did get smashed at away games. But you were never annoying. Rather restrained in fact. A very sensible young man in fact. With a very fit girlfriend (much prior to the splendid Mrs GB)

Sorry to disappoint :ROFLMAO:

But the accompanying video wasn’t. I’d class it as a bunch.
Old men you said, I’ve watched the video again and can’t say I saw any “old men” doing anything wrong.
Not sure what age you think and old man is? How old are you?

Bottom tier all I could see apart from the fan in the news story is Albion fans of all ages singing.
Top tier a few fans near the divide goading and dodging attacks, I would say some in their 30s, maybe one to the left early 40s…..definitely not old men.

The top tier at the front came under attack from the AEK fans at the end of the match, they tried to set fire to my son’s flag and then steal it, some decent Albion fans saved the flag but came under attack from AEK fans swinging punches around the front of the barrier. Post #45

I think some people need to just lighten up a bit as well, and realise sometimes it is fun to have a few beers and wind up the opposition fans from behind the safety of the segregation (providing they don’t carry knives). Obviously wind milling a few Greek blokes is a one off incident, don’t think it’s a massive inditement on our support. I agree with @Ike and Tina Burner I’ve always found older blokes far more problematic at away games than younger ones. Too many people accuse them of being plastics etc, when a lot of these lads put in the miles every week. Most of them are completely sound if you actually talk to them.
I don’t disagree in the case of the majority, but there are a small minority that can make the experience pretty unpleasant if you’re unlucky enough to be in amongst them (have seen several people move to avoid them). The only person I’ve actually called out where the line was crossed imo at an away game was a guy in his 60s TBF so maybe you’re right

The dull part of the south coast
Of course it was tame, there was netting and perspex to stop anything happening. But at what age did you realise pointlessly banging on the perspex, making wanker signs, threatening people who can't get at you (or you at them) and trying to impress the teenagers around you is a bit embarrassing when everyone knows nothing is going to happen.

17, 19, 20, 25, 30, 40, 55 ?
And the bonus ball number is . . . . . :lolol:

Well as a fifty something piss head I had a nice time at the front. I was right near the fence and my son and I generally had a nice time with the AEK fans, on the odd occasion we did ‘get the finger’ or similar, I just kissed the badge on my Athens scarf and this threw them and they moved onto someone else.

We stayed at the end and just soaked it all (not just the thrown beer and spit) it may well be my last Euro away. So to pass a bit of time we amused ourselves by watching, the subject geezer of this thread, the overexcited Greeks and the police giving a few locals a good beating.

I wasn’t backing away though when some of their angry ones made slit throat gestures or in one case, in good English informed me “you are all gonna die” I just put on a Danny Dyer accent and replied “oh just go and sit down you fuckin plum” As for the fighting, I haven’t thrown a punch since 1987, I wasn’t starting again now.

As a footnote who was that geezer in the black in the video, pitchshide climbing on the fence? At one point he was in the Athens end and at another he was in with us an even shook my hand at one point before making off over the Perspex again. The stewards left him alone.

Excuse the Northern Lights, I think I got a bit of Feta on my lens

Worthing
Lots of people saying we have a load new pissed up twats then ever.
Not true in my opinion of having watched Brighton away all through the 70’s and 80’s
And as for putting most of the blame on coke ? Well that’s just plain ignorant.

“And here on Holidaying in the Aegean we have Costas and his brother mending their nets ready for their early morning fishing trip to bring back their succulent seafood back to the tourists tavernas.”

amazingly there was a time when a significant minority thought going to football was really about having a fight .... times have changed thankfully and we have a thread about one individual (mainly) rather than 300....

The video though should show more i.e. it should show how he got to that place not just him there as it might be more useful in determining his actions and purpose
I'm old enough to remember that too. In my opinion, the fighting was largely between those that wanted to get involved - it was possible to walk right through the middle of it sometimes without any hassle. There are more bellends being abusive within/to our own support recently in my experience.

Arguably the stupidist post I've ever read on here. When was this time exactly? In the 70s and 80s when it was like the purge? In the 90s and early 2000s when half the players were functioning alcoholics and that was just accepted? Football and alcohol are and pretty much always have been inexplicably linked. To suggest that young fans have somehow introduced drinking is genuinely outrageous
I think the word you're looking for is inextricably. And nobody's saying young fans have 'introduced drinking' - that's a wild leap in your argument. Personally, I think far more people drink heavily now at the football than used to - largely because alcohol is so much more easily available en masse.

Wonder if they’ve ever tried to get gear abroad that isn’t mainly washing powder… Let alone know about the wattsapp groups worldwide for obtaining credible stuff 🤣
