In reality though, and setting aside Fulham's games in hands as it complicates things slightly, we only need to match the sides below us over the second half of the season to remain above them.

I wonder if there's any trend of bottom sides accruing more points in the second half of the season than the first.

A couple of years ago we needed Palace to beat Cardiff on the last day of the season to save our necks. Not even close to that yet. If you want to stir the shit at least try to be vaguely credible.

Point of order. They played in the second to last game of the season. We were safe on the final day. Which is good because on the final day they beat Man Utd 2-0, while we rolled over to gift the title Man City.

Plus, the whole 'it's a league, all the results count the same, we stayed up because we were able to get more points than them which is as much about us winning points as it is about them dropping points and their loss against palace was no more important than any of their other losses', but that's by the by, your overall point of closeness to relegation still stands.

It's been 34 or 35 points for survival for each of the last 4 seasons. (i.e. 1 point better than 18th - could actually have achieved with 33/34 and goal difference)

I wouldn't rule out a team staying up on under 30 points this season.

A larger than average number of points is being taken up by places 6-10, this explains the lower points total with the lower teams

I was stone cold sober and have a dislike for Spuds. I liked Scott Parker as a player and think he's doing a good job as a manager.

Its no other clubs fault we're below par so far this season.

I've been touting Newcastle to go down for a few seasons. Both they and Burnley are in the mix. If Fulham can maintain their form they'll climb, but that's a big If. Newcastle could drop. but have a 5 point cushion on us at present. Still a lot to play for.

Leeds and Fulham are huge games, fail to win one and we're definitely in the drop zone at the end of the month and I don't think we've got what it takes to climb out. Like Fulham a few years ago . . . . too good to go down!

Re: Newcastle- posters have been quick to say 'teams like they' won't go down, they never do, that posters on NSC always write off teams like they and they always do enough. Well, it shows a rather short memory given they were down the last time we were, and before that when CH got them up. If anything they've been a bit of a 'yo yo' club in the last ten years.
Added to that their form- second from bottom, the fact their best attacking player is out with long covid and having Bruce in charge, who knows a thing or two about both mediocrity AND relegation, and i really don't think they're anywhere close to guaranteed to stay up.

Indeed. I was looking at WBA and Sheffield United and the stats regarding their points at Christmas and the fact nobody has got close to staying up with such few.
But, this season is unique. We haven't had a season like it that I can remember. Anyone can beat anyone. And, much like in the Championship, just a decent (or poor) run of 3-5 games can massively change things. Just look at Arsenal.
I suspect the team in 17th will have the lowest total of any team to stay up in history.

It isn't a coin toss between us and Fulham at all. We still have over half the season to play and both Burnley and Newcastle look every bit as vulnerable as ourselves and Fulham. Newcastle are 5 points ahead of us - not exactly insurmountable.

Fulham are really impressive. Very powerful. Very quick.
Anguisa is a really dynamic midfielder and with Lemina (who is injured but due back any time soon) they are very solid in the middle, but it's the way they break that is really impressive. All their players seem to be rapid. Loftus Cheek gives them a bit of guile, Lookman is very tricky. Reid is very underrated IMHO and a decent finisher.
Anderson is a real leader at the back. Very good GK.
They're a decent team, I really can't see them going down.

Newcastle are the ones IMHO.

But Fulham were dreadful against us. We were disappointed in not beating us but they should be far more disappointed at not beating a relegation rival at home, and barely looking like doing so.

Having said that it is rare for the bottom 3 at this stage to stay the bottom 3 and they could certainly stay up, other teams will get sucked in, that's the way of these things.
