Surely the idea of pre-season friendlies is to gradually gain fitness for the start of the season and assess possible triallists.

I would have thought this would be better achieved by playing non-league teams rather than sorting out a 'glamour' friendly.

How do you 'assess possible trialists' against non-league teams then? Even Doug Loft looks like a so-so player when pitched in against Hassocks.
