Poyet to Wolves

Villa are most definitely "a proper club". O'Neill showed that with the right manager they're top 6/7 material.

Randy Lerner has apparently fallen out of love with Aston Villa and football generally. There's unlikely to be much money for McLeish's successor. Ofcourse they are a big, proper club, but they're hardly a very attractive one right now.
Following Hodgson at WBA doesn't seem an appealing option either. It would be hard to improve or match Hodgson's achievements. I'd rather take over at Wolves than WBA, there's an opportunity to rebuild there.
However, I think Poyet is in an enviable position at B&HA. He has a real opportunity to take you into The Premier League at the end of next season, and a double promotion on his record would make him a prime candidate for a really big job, bigger than any currently in the midlands, a couple of years from now.

You never see Lambert as a name mentioned when a "really big job" comes up. If a double promotion is all you need, he'd be a prime candidate (as would Adkins of course).

Cardiff fans are getting nervous that WBA or Wolves will come in for Malky Mackay and in truth he is probably ahead of Gus in the desirability pecking order. Going to be a lively old summer though

But once again, unless either of the Black Country clubs offer him a fantastically good contract why leave Cardiff? Cardiff City haven't been in the top-flight for half a century, but they're still as big a club, in my opinion, as WBA or Wolves.

Something I've thought every time a 'Gus to....' thread comes up. The names that have been linked with Chelsea are really big names like Laurent Blanc for example and (I saw somewhere today) Redknapp. They are not likely to go with anyone untested at top level again after AVB. The middle tier Premiership clubs could - and do - therefore trade the same old names by and large. The first names to break in to this 'same old names' gang would be Rogers of Swansea, McDermott of Reading, Adkins, Lambert or Chris Hughton. All have a much better cv than Gus - at the moment.

Two things matter most to Gus from what I can see. 1) Being in charge and 2) the ambition of the club. The first will not change. He has that as long as he wants it at Brighton. The second could conceivably if Tony decides he doesn’t agree with Gus on the level of financial input. Other than that to me its simple. Gus would have to be pretty convinced by the setup, ambition and the willingnes of Wolves to give him and Tano free rein. I just don't see them able to provide him with that assurance with the current leadership. But I don't think anybody should be under any illusions that he wouldn't consider it if that was the case. Their history makes them a much bigger club than us in my view.

The other point about Gus is that not every chairman will enjoy working with him. He's amazingly outspoken and forthright and I suspect capable of embarrassing any board that he falls out with, for any reason. Brighton's set-up can seemingly deal with this side of Gus's character.
