I heard this about a month ago from someone within the club.

Not to suggest that means it's true. Maybe they started or picked up on the same rumour.

should be able to get a nice house with that....
Sadly for me, my first thought was:-

'Imagine the amount of pic'n'mix you can get for that'.

We had to buy land from the Universiy and the cost of steel and other building materials has risen much more than inflation over the last ten years. Thank you China.

I reckon he will keep:

Bennett
The Swindon Keeper foreign bloke
McNulty
Crofts
Murray
Forster

I think he will then try and clear the rest out!

Does that include El-Abd who Poyet recently called the best defender at the club? I can't see the clear out being that widespread.

I can't see Dicker, Tunniclife, Navarro or El-Abd going anywhere, he's likely to keep Kuipers too at least until the end of the season. Poyet has already said he doesn't like to do business in January so I'd expect the transfers to be key players in key positions, experienced centre back, couple of midfielders and possibly a striker with the rest being kept on as backup.

I'd expect to see Smith, Virgo, Craig Davies possibly McLeod and Livermore moving on. I don't think Hoyte will have his loan extended. I see it being quality rather than quantity for this transfer window and the real clear out to begin in the summer.

I am no mathmetician, but for something to go from £40 million to £93 million in 10 years is an inflation rate of over 130%

assuming the RPI has risen by approx 3% per annum, can you please explain your reasoning

Good point ,but how much was a Premier league player earning for example back then?
Were there any players 150k a week ?

I actually heard via an associate of Tony Bloom that it was going to be nearer £5million, a couple of weeks back, but not until next summer. Obviousy I didn't believe it, hence didn't share it, but this threads got me thinking there maybe more truth to it than I first suspected....And though the exact amount might be far of the mark, it seems that a comparibly "big" investment in the squad may well be on the cards.

So, usual question. Is anyone who has heard this rumour actually going to say who they heard it from or are people just making stuff up due to boredom?

So usual reply. Can't name sources. You don't get how this works do you? And even if I did, what does that then prove to you? That could be made up. Or are you going to email that person on the basis that you heard it via a chatroom? :lolol: Sorry, I don't me to mock if that was your objective :p

I would place money on the posters being bored!

I always take these 'rumours' with a pinch of salt. The only info I believe is when I see it on seagulls.co.uk or a few people have said 'club text'

Having said that I do believe a large amount of money needs to be available for us to have any chance of leaving this division at the right end!

I wouldn't because I would have done that a few weeks ago. But my input to this was as follows and I'll make it easier for those ready to poor scorn by highlighting the bits I think are most important:

Agreed. The club would never let it be known how much is available as it would push the price of any player up immediately.
I can't see players who have contracts like Cox until 2011 being paid off either as that ties up more money.

Well, you heard what you heard. But it doesn't take a genius to work out that a guy who is paying millions out for a stadium isn't going to have serious money to spend if the need arises, which it certainly does at the present time!

Let's hope we get a few players to unwrap in the January sales!

I hope so, we need investment in the squad regardless. Don't forget that Bloom's investment in the stadium is over the next 20 years e.g. it's a mortgage. The entire world of football is funded by credit so cash available for players doesn't necessarily equate to Falmer. Besides, this club's never made a profit really and it's not stopped us spending big in the past!

I think you will find it's not a mortgage! It 's an interest free loan to the club. The stadium will open up fully paid to the contractors.

If the club are not able to repay Bloom in 2023 then he will convert the loan outstanding into shares. Extremely generous and he has said the stadium is a legacy from him to his kids and supporters kids. :)

Sorry, I meant to say it operates like a mortgage, which is a large loan e.g. it's credit with interest to pay.

If you are correct then i'd feel a little concerned. 5 million pounds is an obscene amount of money to spend in the third tier and regardless of Blooms backing increasing our debt by this amount could heap huge financial pressure on the club should Blooms money runs out or his cicumstances change in the future.

I'm a strong believer in spending slowly and more importantly wisely over time, not just throwing money in for over inflated transfer targets. I'd hate it if we became a lower league Man city despised by fellow teams, receiving little praise for achievements due to people believing we just brought success.
