They used to be black but it caused a problem when trying to find them at crash sites, especially when in the sea.

A black box in programming terms is designing something with inputs and outputs so whoever using it doesn't care what's going on inside. You can then easily swap it out with a new one easily. Effectively a reusable component.

The colour refers to the "inside" not the outside. You can't see what's going on because it's dark.

Because the early flight recorders recorded data mechanically on film the inside of the box had to sealed dark and black to stop the film being exposed. Just like a camera.

That's where I understand the term to come from.

You are correct sir, however the ones used as we know them now, have always been red/orange. There's some that say the term black box comes from a quote referring to the red egg but I tend to agree with your post. Apart from the 'black box' all the on board computers are in black boxes.

The Rolls Royce Trent 800 engines (fitted to this 777) transmits data back to the RR engine operation centre back in the UK; however, I believe this data is too heavy to stream in real time, so the data is dumped overland where applicable. If I'm wrong, RR may indeed have valuable engine trend data that the relevant investigation teams will use in this incident.

Future systems are being deployed to increase data volumes through wireless data transmission as the aircraft approaches the gate after landing. This will enable more data to be analysed, but will not be as immediate as ACARS, where data can be assessed well before the aircraft lands again.
