Why do we accurately say that we get "in" a car, yet "on" a boat, train, plane, bus etc...?

I would suspect that if you actually tried to get "on" a plane in the literal sense, there's a fair chance you'd fall off it before you got where you were going. And it'd be a bit cold out there.

The dogs' bollocks...supposed to mean something that is really good, but I always thought that was the cats whiskers...different animal, opposite end...and a little too close to its arsehole for my liking.

Dogs bollocks= Outstanding, something to be proud of.

Could be that you are considered "on" board when you are on a plane, boat, train, bus etc...whilst you are "in" a car....just a suggestion.

"Have your/their cake and eat it"

whats the point of a cake unless you eat it? shit saying.

"cheap at half the price"

eh? shouldn't it be cheap at twice the price, ie its so cheap you could double it and still be cheap?

That one always gets me too, and I agree with you as what it should logically be.

True, but if you consider that whether it's a car or a plane/bus/train, you enter the vehicle, sit down and do not leave the vehicle until your journey is complete...so why two different words for doing the same thing?

One that's always puzzled me is "Eat Your Heart Out" as in "Eat your heart out Elvis Presley". I know what it's supposed to mean but how exactly did that saying come about? Cos it's a bit sick if you think about it. Isn't it?
