we held are own but that's isn't the 6 th best team in the prem.
Brez 10 (Didn't put a hand or foot wrong)
Cald 7 (Didn't see much of him really .. missed the sublime chip mentioned)
Greer 8 (The slice had me pissing myself otherwise a great Captains job)
Dunk 9 (Best game for a while .. like the way he's beginning to run with ball)
El Abd 8 (Theatrics aside coped well, not sure about his marauding runs, needs a better set of brakes)
Bridcutt 10 (Huge presence and confidence - hardly put a foot wrong)
Buckley 10 (All been said before)
JFC 6 (maybe just a little too much for him)
Sparrow 8 (Where did he go? Was doing well and getting in nice positions and responsible for getting us forward)
Barnes 9 (Getting better all the time)
CMS 7 (Please sign Vokes, Heskey ... anyone!)
refusing to do the subs
Their lot 0 Cabaye gets -10 for being a first class tool
Their fans 7 - pretty good for a bunch of southern based geordies I reckon
Our fans 10 - great atmo, get the West and North singing the same songs at the same time and it'll be 11

So let me get this right. We held our own against a Premiership team (any Premiership team if you don't think we should go by league position) and you think we did that by playing average.

We were ok, watching the game I wasn't blown away by us. We didn't take the game to them woe were very deep there was a huge gap between the midfield and Cms.
Have you ever played football yourself? (or any sport for that matter).
Playing against a team that is a jump up in class is so difficult. Us just holding our own against them should put the level of performance in perspective.

Yes I have played football and to a decent level thank you. I thought there looked a bigger gap between us and Newcastle then there did between us and Wrexham.

Doubt there is too many people on here that they can say they have scored a goal against Chelsea at bisham abbey.
You're a wise old owl and one of the saner voices on NSC, but you are way off the mark here.
Over achieving Prerm side turning out the best team they could (I accept they had their two stars missing but we had Vicente out) were beaten by a team for whom buying one of the oppositions bit part youth players was a big stretch financially.
I won't go down your ratings one by one because it is a matter of opinion, but have to pick up on:
Greer - was utterly superb. Ameobi didn't get a sniff today. Under-rated perfromance by many on here. CBs are a bit like the anti-terrorist squad - you only notice them when the bomb goes off. Today he defused Ameobi - a 6'3" prem striker and captain of their side - completely.
Dunk - did struggle early on but you could see him improving as the game went on. Cool, calm, clinical passer. Was magnificent by the end.
Sparrow - has benefited from a run in the side so hope his injury isn't serious. Tackled hard and really manned up today, without sacrificing his passing game. Delighted with a player who gets better and better under Gus.
Bridcutt - will be leaving us in the Summer on the basis of that performance alone. Crunching tackles and pin point distribution 90% of the time. Pocket battleship who Prem teams will be salivating over.
Overall - agree about the long balls in the first half particularly, but assume that is what being under presure from Premier League players forces you to do. Could be seen as good pass selection given that in most of those circumstances the shorter, square pass would have been higher risk than the punt up field. But you have to have seen more from us in yesterdays game than you report. On two occasions there were 10-pass one touch moves swinging from one side of the pitch to the other that any side, anywhere, would have been proud of. Great performance. Deserved result. And finally:
Gus - people have been known to criticise his tactics and substitutions. Send apologies c/o The Amex, Falmer, East Sussex. Out thought a lauded Prem manager and played his cards superbly. Shows what he can do (as most of us knew he could) if he isn't forced to use his subs early in the match for injuries and sendings off.
Ah I'm starting to understand, you are comparing two televised performances.
So I ask again, do you go to watch us?

I will happily bow to the superior wisdom of NSC. I am as excited and as proud as anyone at beating Newcastle and at the end I was bouncing off the ceiling. Maybe I've watched too much football over my years of exile where I had no personal engagement with either side so got my pleasure from analysing the game but I thought Newcastle were tactically niaive and some of their key players were not as committed as they should have been or needed to be. Pardew in my view got almost every decision wrong, perhaps starting with taking a depleted squad on a sunshine break instead of fully analysing his opponents. They were concerned at the beginning not to lose and never changed that mindset or the pace of the game in the way you would have expected. This was definitely not the Toon who have got to sixth in the Premiership and how they must be longing to get their ACoN players back and their regular defenders fit. That said yestreday was essentially down to their manager.

I think that would have be a harsh pen. It was hit with venom from 2 yards away, two players were diving to each other, barnes's arms were not as out as greer's(?), they were up against his chest, a somewhat natural instinct when almost colliding with a team mate.
A good performance, we were comfortable in possession, we pressured and frustrated them, wanted it more. We restricted them, either through skill or desire, to only maybe 4 serious chances.
7 for an 'excellent' performance?
On reflection, I think I got carried away with most of my votes. I think I forgot some of the lax defending in the first half (Newcastle's best chance in that half fell to Leon Best when the ball was lofted into the centre of the penalty area in the middle of three of our players and no one challenged for it. One of their better chances in the second half came when Bridcutt, under no pressure went to head a ball that was coming down right on him, and he missed it. But there was some great play by our defence and bridders.
I think that's a low mark. Made a couple of good passes, was great in defensive cover, and got into some good positions (cms's wild shot in retrospect should have been a pass to barnes in the middle, JFC kept passing behind Barnes when he was in a promising position)

It was that type of run you do when crossing the road and a car is coming so you run but it's as slow as when you walk. I thought his running around was more effective than usual. He actually seemed to be pressing the players in possession rather than chasing them and not getting there until after they've comfortably released the ball.
As well as "his" goal he was our biggest threat, I think 7 is a little low.
I do think Harley gets more criticism than is warranted, but any time he got the ball and needed to turn he seemed to have to run in a big circle, rather than just turning on the spot.
I think part of Newcastle's poor performance was the pressure we put them under when they had the ball, CMS. I think we also frustrated them by retaining possession in our usual style, playing it back rather than risk losing it with a percentage ball into their box, perhaps throwing their rhythm a little.
No, not our best performance from a technical stand point, but we weren't overawed, the mistakes and errant passes weren't costly because we pressured them from the forward line.
