When people give these ratings are they rating the player on their ability or on their impact to the game?

You see I would rate Stephens as a 6 (average) on Saturday, that being a 6 based on HIS ability, he had an average game for him. Had Propper put in that performance I would have rated him a 5 as I think he is a better player.
I’ve felt for a few weeks that Stephens was putting in 7-8 performances by his standards, this was never going to last, I don’t think on Saturday he was that bad by his standards I just think he’s a limited player at this level, unfortunately a Stephens ‘average’ rating of 6 negatively effects the team.

So how do others do their ratings?

How they played and their impact on the game.

Pretty obvious TBH. I played centre back in ex pat teams in Asia and I'm now back here and in my late 40s. I make Butters look quick. If I somehow ended up on the pitch against Sheffield United I should get a 10 if I even marked someone for 10 seconds or won a header. But my impact on the game would be -100. Same rules apply for the pros.

Simply by their performance in the game in their main role/s (eg I wouldn’t expect Duffy or Stephens to carve open chances, but Propper and Gross would, hopefully). With superlative moments of goals, assists, saves, marking a key opponent out of a game, all upping a rating. Awful moments directly costing us goals conceded or gifting chances, downgrading a rating.

I disregard the attempted dictate someone once posted, that 6 is a baseline every player deserves, just for turning out. So why do the numbers 0 to 5 exist?
