I’m not overly convinced we were tactically out-thought. Our downfall was primarily down to Sheffield United closing us down every time we had the ball. This happened all over the pitch and prevented us from getting going. Also, when we did have possession any move eventually resulted in a sloppy or overhit final ball. A number of individual players had shockers as well. None of this is down to tactics imho.

So are you suggesting that we didn’t know Sheff Utd would press high, and that we wouldn’t work to counteract it?

No. I’m suggesting our failings were more to do with ability, application and error.

Whilst we were poor, we were ineffective to the extent that substitutions were made at half-time, which would suggest that we needed to change tactically. That is not just down to error and application.

Incidentally Potter should be applauded for trying.

And tactics were changed multiple times but the same errors and sloppy execution still let us down. As I say, I feel the issue yesterday was more to do with this than anything else. If individual players are going to be so woeful it doesn’t matter what your tactics are.

If we are worried about Duffy giving the ball away, Webster set a low bar yesterday. He may as well have been trying to pass to the yellow shirts.

If Duffy doesn't replace Webster after that he will never get in the team bar injury or suspension.

The fact they were changed ‘multiple times’ reinforces the point, whilst this would have happened anyway, coupled with the substitutions just highlights we had it wrong to start with.

I’m not denying we were poor, but there is no doubt for me Potter got it wrong including team selections.

A bad day for all not just the players.

Yes, this whole Duffy is clumsy in possession doesn’t take into account that when Webster actually wins an aerial challenge it rarely goes to a Brighton player.

Anti Potter knives being sharpened. ONE bad game does not mean that everything has turned to shit FFS

Quite - but he is allowed a bad day, like everyone else and yesterday was one.

Hughton got quite a lot wrong between January and March, and he received a lot of criticism as well.

Poor performance or not, nobody can convince me that tactically we did not get a number of things wrong.

Potter is a genius and has done a great job convincing Burns he can play at left back. After that debacle, persuading Webster that he can play at centre-back might be a push, though.

Ryan - 5 Will be disappointed with the goal.

Montoya - 5 - Run into a lot of blind alleys especially 1st half.
Webster - 4 - Really becoming concerned about his form. I think he needs taking out of the firing line for a bit.
Dunk - 6 - Stand out of a poor defensive line which wasn't saying much.
Burn - 5 - Bernardo must wonder who he has upset. Burn is a decent CD but has severe limitations as a full back.

Stephens - 5 - His worst performance of the season. Has been excellent until now though and deserves sticking with.
Propper - 6 - Poor 1st half as was the whole team.
Mooy - 6 - drifted in and out of the game.

Gross - 4 - Taken off and cannot have any complaints
Maupay - 6 - No service.
Trossard - 4 - Starting to really worry about him. Thought he gave the ball away time after time as he has done over a number of games especially Palace. Needs to come out of the team for awhile.

Connolly - 6 - We looked better for him being there
Murray - 5 - No service and played out on the left which I thought was strange.
Bissouma - 6 - Broke lines and tried to make things happen.

Remedial class for Potter and back to basics for half a dozen players. All in the ups and downs of footy though, UTA

Fiveways
Ryan 4 -- love him, but very poor
Montoya 6
Webster 3 -- dreadful, in hindsight it looks obvious that Duffy should have started, although it's by no means obvious that Duffy is the answer against Spurs (this has been made marginally more the case now Son is injured). Webster now needs to be used selectively to get his form back, and to be given a crash course in heading practice
Dunk 5
Burn 5 -- rather Bernardo started. Whether Burn starts alongside Dunk is a different question
Stephens 5 -- let's hope it was an off-day. Was our best player this season for the first eight or so games, but is getting worse rapidly
Propper 6 -- he is not a right-back
Mooy 7 -- constantly trying to make things happen, lots of good decisions, not his best day in terms of execution. Really has been excellent for a long time now
Gross 4.5 -- needs a rest
Maupay 6 -- like him, but he wasn't up to much, and I'll generously blame that on poor service and bad tactical decisions
Trossard 4.5 -- used to look like the most impressive player we've ever had ... until he starts a game

Subs:
Connolly 6.5 -- up for it
Murray 4 -- sorry to say, but looks past it
Bissouma 5 -- should have started, braindead dive

Potter 4 -- love him, but got too many things wrong

Can't disagree with much of that. I thought Burn played well yesterday but sooner or later that lack of pace at LB will be exposed and there is nothing that can be done to rectify that.

Ryan - 5 Seemed something was missing. Is his confidence getting rocky because of Webster?

Montoya - 5
Webster - 1 Shocking performance. Pleaase not another recruitment cock-up. Get Duffy back in.
Dunk - 5
Burn - 5

Stephens - 2 The "new manager bounce" appears to be over. Reverted to type. Only contributions were negative ones. Shocking
Propper - 7 Class always shows out.
Mooy - 6 Did his bit. Tried hard.

Gross - 4 Largely anonymous
Maupay - 6 Ran and tried. Lack of supply a huge problem
Trossard - 5

Connolly - 6 Looked a bit better when he came on.
Murray - 4 Love him. But if Murray is the answer. WTF is the question?
Bissouma - 6 We certainly perked up when he came on.

Can't disagree with much of this, apart 6 for Propper. No-one was worth 7.
