Kay Burley was stoking it this morning on Sky News ... telling her own personal story from yesterday where the first few service stations she tried were closed and then found one that had loads of pumps closed and just a few open.

She then made the point that she wasn't suggesting people should panic buy ... she was just saying what happened to her

That’s pretty much what happened last time. The BBC ran that story about BP petrol stations having none left and anybody who saw it went out and filled up (myself included).

I was away on hols the last time ... totally oblivious to it when we got home. Went out next day as only had 30 miles left in the tank to complete and utter chaos. Took me almost a week to get diesel!

…if people lose trust of being able to fill up when necessary..they will make more trips to the fuel station to keep the tank topped up just in case etc etc

About 5 weeks until I take my driving test. I hope this shit dies down before then.

Taking your test late in life ?

Yeah, I'm 44. Never needed it before but being a bus wanker for the last couple of years has made me finally bite the bullet.
Bought my car already (confidence or stupidity, not sure which yet). It's sat outside so it's a daily reminder for me to knuckle down and pass my test.
Can't wait for that first day of freedom!

Good luck with test. Don't be to disheartened failing first time around. Put in for another test ASAP. Don't dally about.
I knew somebody who brought a car first who ended up selling it. Its all the excitement. If you love your car you will love driving.
I thought you had dodgy eyes ?

I wear glasses but nothing other than that.
It's 100% the car I wanted at the price I wanted to pay, got it a couple of weeks ago. Passed my theory last year which was the kick up the arse I needed to apply for lessons, doing an intensive course, 15 days back to back and the test towards the end of next month.
Excited and nervous in equal amounts at the moment but I'm sure I'll be bricking it on the day.
Fingers crossed anyway.

Well this evening I was kind of on fumes (having driven to Towcester and back last weekend). I let my tank drain down without any sense of particular urgency, as I only have to do the pointless Haywards Heath 40 mile office round-trip yomp twice a week these days.

Anyways, I rock up at Holmbush tonight after collecting a few bits, fully expecting to fill up. Nah. ALL coned off. By now my petrol blinker is ON, warning me that my tank is drier than Gandhi's flip-flops. I make it to Shoreham High St and that little rip-off Jet petrol station - where there is an actual QUEUE ffs. My gasping motor crawled onto the forecourt, whereupon I bent over, stuck the pump up my arse, and blasted £77 worth of pure overpriced unleaded right up my rusty sheriffs badge.

The moral of the tale ? Don't assume you can just mince up to any petrol forecourt and fill your boots. Don't get caught short.

After my trip to the Shoreham Tip yesterday morning I headed for Tesco Holmbush as only had 70 miles of diesel in the tank. No queues ... great I thought! Only they didn't have any diesel.

Headed into the Shell garage on my way back home - again no queues ... and again no diesel (which had apparently just run out).

BUT ... they did have V Power diesel ... at £1.959 a litre FFS (compared to £1.719 for my usual stuff at Tesco) !! Had to put some in - but like you I said to my wife after that we shouldn't let the tank run down as we usually do and assume we can just rock up any time and fill up!!

It's apparent that the mystery shortage on the forecourts has little effect on people's behaviour - I visited the area for the first time since lockdown last week, (it was good to be back) and everywhere was just rammed on a Friday morning. Next, M&S, Mcdonalds at Holmbush all really busy with people mostly it seemed on leisure trips. I feel the same when we're discussing power generation, surely we have to look at our demand as much as we do supply? Holmbush has no fuel, likewise Shoreham beach, had to go to Worthing as we had about 50 miles in the tank with the 275 mile trip home on Saturday.....

On a wider note, it did feel like the area was much busier than we we left (5 years ago), is it just me?

Have been running the wife to and from the hospital in Norwich every day for radiotherapy (about 30 mile round trip), watching the fuel gauge slowly creep southwards. Diesel around here has been rare as hens teeth and living out in the sticks means you can hardly pootle around checking out different garages. Was getting a bit tense about how I would manage next week but it appears the situation is easing. Our local village garage had its first delivery for 10 days and I was lucky to be passing when the queue was only about 5 vehicles so managed to fill up. The owner was keeping an eye on things, making sure nobody was taking the piss with jerry cans. He told me the delivery had come in 3 hours ago and he had already placed another order as he knew that was gonna get used fairly soon.

If you can hold out for a few days and let those who are really running low get some in then this should hopefully sort itself out.

Nah it’s busier …but Fridays tend to be even more so at Holmbush

Shoreham is much busier, but Friday morning are usually quiet (or today was as well) aside a queue all along the High Street @ 07:30 I'm gussing for juice @ Texaco?

I cycled past and pedalled to Lancing.. . .haven't needed any petrol since early March thankfully.

Good luck Gabafella, Don't be afraid of failing, I did 1st time, the 4 week gap between tests gavve me time to think and I relaxed ( a bit) and passed.
