I am confused about all the petrol and utility bill price hikes.

Why are electricity costs impacted by oil and gas ?

It's the interconnectiveness of all things in a free market economy.

And a need for a small hike in price is an opportunity to bring in a massive hike in price.

If you recall, in the early weeks of Covid many retailers exceeded all profit expectations.

I like capitalism, me, despite being a labour member, but at some point there will be a revolt. That, or long faces for the masses, and catastrophe for the few, like that poor nurse during the early Covid weeks who found her supermarket stripped bare by hoarders when she went shopping after her late shift, and blogged, distraught.

It's long faces, isn't it.

???

there's also VAT. there is scope for treasury to cut duty or VAT, keep same revenues while also helping with pump prices. lets hope they do so.

I would be as delighted as I would be surprised if they do.

But our coffers are not all that flush right now, are they?

Thoughts and prayers, etc.

Why has my BT bill gone up 10%, looks like the water will be similar, I get the gas but it looks like everyone is hiking their bills up as they think they can get away with it.

I assume any company that uses energy will have higher running costs as well. BT must consume huge amounts of electricity running their networks, as must the water companies. It isn’t just domestic customers higher fuel bills impact on.

Does anyone actually stop there for fuel?

Just stopped on way back from Heathrow for a scatter and to purchase 2 Cornish Pasties.
Not stupid enough to buy fuel there.

I'm sorry that another thing is happening that will disproportionately impact the poor, but the end of cheap fossil fuels may turn out to be in the long term a positive development.

More and more of us will have to redesign our lives around cleaner energy and less consumption and governments will be forced into policy which enables this transition.

The prices here have more than doubled since late 2020 to now, ouch.

£1.69 per litre this morning... that's more than £7.50 a gallon! Crikey, I remember when the £1 a gallon threshold was a big deal. :nono:

Yes that was a big one.

I am pretty sure it sat around .80pence per gallon in 1980 as I covered for lunch break serving customers.

Yes, 80 pence to £7.50, and attendant serving you while you sit in the car and checking you battery, oil levels and tyre pressureres if requested and now we serve ourselves.

How things have changed.

Try getting one though, if you want a new one looking at up to 12 months delivery

Yeah I noticed that most cars show as out of stock. Planning to call around and find out lead times but suspect I won't have much choice. MG5 was showing in stock on leasing.com, not exactly what I wanted but it's cheap, the spec is ok and an estate suits my situation so if everything else is months for delivery I'll just take it and be better prepared for the next one.

The name gives it away
Still 148.9 for unleaded at Sainsburys West Hove when I filled up about an hour ago. No queue either which surprised me at that price.

I diesel was about 155.9
