I remember in the early 70's as a nipper, going with my parents to drop their mates off at Gatwick for their 2 weeks in the sun via Girona. At the time it all seemed very glamourous. It was just a drive up a ramp, to what's now the south terminal. Obviously much smaller.
Our first flight was with Dan-Air in a de Havilland Comet in 1978. Mid flight with permission you were allowed to go in the cockpit to chat with the team.
The ramp up from the A23 ended with an oval roundabout outside the terminal doors. You could drop passengers off but if you were picking up you had to keep driving slowly round the roundabout until your pick ups came out of the door. If you dared to stop before they appeared then the lone traffic warden would very quickly slap a ticket on your windscreen.
Passenger numbers have increased nearly 8 fold since '78 and with the proposed runway changes are projected to be 12 fold what they were.
