[Misc] People moaning about aircraft noise at Gatwick

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
I can assure you there’s aircraft noise in Copthorne.
All those whinny people need to get a grip the airc engines today are quiet compared to 30 years ago.
I agree. My daughter lived there for over 10 years. It’s where the landing gear descends ready for the runway. The flight path is East Grinstead, Lingfield and Copthorne.

new runway is about 500m south, between the current airfield and Crawley, half of which is industrial estate the rest some fields. no doubt some rare newt and bats live in the "unspoiled" farmland.

ITV local news last night showed a proposed graphic, Gatwick would rather not do that scheme, due to £1b plus of compulsory purchases.

Instead the southern runway moves just 12m southwards, giving enough width for a full blow northern runway.

On the Gatwick extension, I did enjoy this from the Conservative MP, Gavin Bacon:
Labour promised to go ‘further and faster’ on growth, but once again they are failing to deliver.
Increasing aviation capacity would hep to deliver economic growth. Labour’s decision to kick the can down the road, extending the deadline for the final decision on Gatwick to October, shows this promise wasn’t worth the paper it was written on …
Under new leadership, the Conservatives would drive airport expansion forward to support a thriving economy
I'm surprised that the Labour response to literally anything the Tories say isn't "You've had 13 years, mate, you could have done it?"

Anyway, airports are noisy, who knew? I live in Seaford and can hear planes overhead, not a massive surprise that it's quite load near where they take off and land

Aircraft noise is one thing - live near an airport you expect it - IMO more important is the general infastructure (and lack of it) surrounding Gatwick.

There will be 1000s of new jobs - meaning importing 1,000s of people meaning 1,000s of new houses.

Great for the economy, terrible for the surrounding area and enviroment.

🤦🤦🤦 The Centre line of the existing 26/R 8/L ( u may know this as the emergency runway) will be moved towards the North a bit creating the CAA recognised separation between two parallel runways!!

Probably a lot more air pollution, for all of us. How lovely!
Could be worse, you could buy a house in London and pay a premium for air pollution and grime in the air. I need a shower every time I get home from there

Boast if you live on the coast :lolol:

No abuse but a question. Surely you knew about the flight path before you moved in to where you live ?
It wasn't on Gatwick's flight path when I bought the house and isn't really a problem but I know it is in other places now for more people. It's the increase in flights and associated activity that is the concern now. I can't think of a world where more planes in the sky is a good thing. In this noisey world we need quiet spaces.

From wiki: The airport is owned and operated by Gatwick Airport Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ivy Holdco Limited,[30] owned by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), itself owned by BlackRock.[31] In December 2018, Vinci announced that it would acquire a 50.01% majority stake for £2.9bn, with a GIP-managed consortium of investors (Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Australia's sovereign wealth fund and two public pension funds in California and South Korea) owning the remaining 49.9%.[32][33] The sale was completed by the middle of 2019.[34].

It's not like UK plc will benefit from this.

I actually live near Goodwood, and yes I knew about the airfield and race track there. I hear race days and meets but accept that it is regulated and pre-existed. I don't complain about that.

Much like people who live near churches moaning about the bells, why buy a house near something that annoys you? If you decide to suck up the downsides!

I am a bit confused as to why these people expect their complaints to be taken seriously, some even expecting compensation

The second runway at Gatwick has been on the cards for years.

Awaiting posts backing the protestors, I know they’ll be coming

Anyone on here live on the flight path?
A particular problem plaguing the Live Music Scene as well. People buying up property next to gig venues that have been there for decades and then making constant noise complaints putting the venue at risk.

When I first started as an apprentice aircraft engineer at LGW for BCal we would often do engine runs during the night. This would be full throttle on 1-11's. Yes they put the aircraft with mufflers at the rear of the engines to deflect the thrust/noise upwards, however you could even hear them in Horsham, a rumble in the distance, especially in the winter with thinner air. The high bypass engines on the aircraft these days are quiet as a mouse in comparison.
Whoops, fat finger.

One of the first flats I rented when I moved to Brighton backed onto what used to be the Engine Rooms on Morley St.

I knew that going in and was fully prepared to be lulled to sleep on a Thursday / Friday / Saturday night by the dull thump of a club at peak hours.

Our landlord came over to do their six monthly inspection and asked if we'd had cause to complain about the noise yet, explaining they'd made several noise complaints when they lived there previously.

I just smiled and said I quite enjoy bass heavy music.

Idiots. Absolute morons.

Sadly, as you say, it happens all too often.

Planes arriving at Gatwick sometimes approach over us and I hate it, I quite understand why people don't want an increase in air traffic and consequent reduction in environmental quality. We will all benefit from the growth won't we? Guess I'll be a protestor for this, again.

So, I win the prize for first protestor. What prize do I get? Abuse, I expect

Is it really that bad where you live near Goodwood? We live near Chichester and I have to say I have never given aircraft noise a second thought. Perhaps we are not directly affected like you.
I do remember living in Bognor as a lad and back in the ‘50’s you could clearly hear the cars racing at Goodwood when there was a meeting and also the Naval gun practices at Portsmouth.
