"Pay day for everybody"

The programme on after Plane Crash is one of those "folk behaving badly after a few bevvies and how the rozzers deal with it" things.

In a pre-shift briefing, the police were told "it's pay day for everybody", which meant it was going to be a big night for trouble.

Does everyone get paid on the same day? I suspect not.

Some people get their "pay" (as defined in the programme I suspect you're watching) weekly.

Presumably that would be Friday? If so, I doubt the police need reminding EVERY Friday night, that it's pay day.

Maybe there's a perfect storm if the 25th is a Friday.

If you're talking about the Blackpool programme, since when have benefits been known as pay? Surely pay is something you get in exchange for work?

I'm assuming you were referring to 999 What's Your Emergency? on C4.

The people featured in that episode were largely talking about their benefit payments when they referred to "payday". They were the ones queuing up at the cashpoint at 00:01 hours that day.

Many salaried employees, on the other hand, get paid at the end of the month, which means that the Friday immediately after is a busy one.
