I was saddened but not at all surprised by that 999 TV programme. Anyone who thinks Blackpool is worse than Brighton or numerous other resorts is naive. The programme's theme about 'payday' culture across the UK kept making me think about the 'Wonga' sponsorship row, especially as they sponsor Blackpool and how they make money out of desperate people who have to turn to pay day loan sharks or worse still sink into a dependence on crime.
I thought the PC who said something along the lines of 'tax payers pay for the Police but the taxpayers wouldn't like it if they knew how much Police time and resources are spent dealing with the non-taxpayers' (which doesn't even cover the drain on the other emergency servies and NHS) must be blindingly obvious to most of the viewers - except maybe the Politicians who make decisions that create and sustain these social cultures. It will be a brave political party that really tackles the benefits culture head on. The less the country can afford it the sooner it needs to be addressed. What really pisses me off is the ease with which foreign workers come here to take on mainly basic jobs (or worse still somehow become benefits/housing/NHS tourists) because local employers can't get 'British' unemployed to take on - and more importantly show commitment to holding down a job. So many places around here have growing Eastern European populations because they have a work ethic and are prepared to do menial / lower paid jobs while the locals are often content to sit around town centres. It's a perverse situation.
I probably sound like a rabid Daily Mail reader - but I just wish Politicians with real balls would take decisive action rather than spout rhetoric and get a grip on this. There will always be a social underclass if there is no hope or aspiration and just condemns the Country to mega state funding that does nothing to improve things other than stick a plaster on the side of our leaky boat.
