interesting that the opposition were leaping up and down over the weekend about the duty rise saying it will kill what little growth there is etc etc and now they are saying that the giovernment are imcompetatnt by doing it...seems like they want their cake and to eat it.

As much as I do not have any time for politicians and I love The Thick of It, I do rather feel that Paxman's style is bordering on the playground bully. I am never sure it is at all helpful to ask if someone is incompetant or not...it is not as if they are going to say yes is it

The joy of opposition!

Innit. 3p a litre less on fuel isn't going to help anyone, even the 'people who drive cars' as the junior minister said on Newsnight won't notice a blind bit of difference. f***ing pricks.

Why wouldnt it help those that drive cars ?

Plan B being the Brown/Balls plan; spend all you have, then borrow and spend all that, then borrow and spend all that etc. etc. etc.

Correct me if Im wrong; but Brown/Balls arent in the current government are they? Is one of them the Chancellor at present?

I refer of course to the CURRENT government and CURRENT chancellor not having a plan B to the demonstrable failure of their 'cut spending on everything' policy.

3p a litre? Is that REALLY helping? Come on.
It'll help any business for whom transport is a major expense. I just feel that is what this minister should have said, instead of attempting to play the popularist card that the public would ALL find this a major saving in tough times.

As has been said before on this thread - it's not the decision itself that people are concerned about. The Opposition welcomed the decision.

It's the apparent hard-and-fast policy statements being made a month ago, and the fairly dramatic and unexpected U-turn this week (not the first U-turn following this year's Budget statement). When the Treasury announces this without telling the Transport Ministry first, it's an example (not for the first time in the past week) of there appearing to be little clarity and great confusion as to Government policy on... anything.

Well yeah, but that's not what she said was it. It was dressed up as helping families.

Agreed MAX.

I'm happy with £100 a year less to pay in tax. Not a bit deal, I suppose, but many a little makes a mickle, as they say.
That is hardly representative of the population though is it? Considering 3p a litre represents about a 2% price rise, you must be getting through an awful lot of petrol to save £100 a year!

This is what should have happened in the first place - the Tories should have formed a minority government with the Lib Dems only blocking the least palatable policies. The Lib Dems and Tories are not natural bedfellows.

I am a natural Lib Dem voter and won't be voting for this lot whilst Clegg is running the show. They sold out their principles for a whiff of power to some of the biggest clowns in politics. Absolute jokes. Say what you like about Thatcher and Tebbit, at least they had principles and some guts.

Its likely that neither the Tories or Labour will win the next election either so the Lib Dems will be in a 'kingmaker' position again. Then after playing a massive part in the shafting of the country at present they will tart themselves to Labour, who may be the better of the two parties at that time (possibly with another leader). I wouldnt think Labour would jump into bed with them if Clegg was still (I wont say 'running the show') in the car but locked in the boot. So you may be in starnge times with your party.

Ah, right - those are the only two fiscal policies available?

Cheers for clearing that up.

Those are the two policies being espoused. Balls is still spouting the "spend your way out of trouble" claptrap, although, to be fair, he's a little more sheepish about it these days and Milliband tries not to talk about it.

One of them is the Shadow Chancellor, in case it missed your notice, and is still advocating the "Brown" plan as described above, which, even more demonstrably, failed disastrously. Who could forget "We have abolished boom and bust" or "I have saved the world"?
