One of them is the Shadow Chancellor, in case it missed your notice, and is still advocating the "Brown" plan as described above, which, even more demonstrably, failed disastrously. Who could forget "We have abolished boom and bust" or "I have saved the world"?

He said 'We saved the banks.'

You seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that as I have pointed out the critical failings of the leaders of this government (i.e that they are clueless out of touch fuckwits) that I am in someway supporting the failed Prime Ministership of Gordon Brown. I dont know which posts have given you this impression but you are wrong.

If you want to get into a quotes game who can forget 'We are all in this together', proclaimed before giving tax cuts to the highest earners whilst living standards for the rest of the country declined as a direct result of of the micky mouse policies conjured up by this government.

My original post regarding plan B was in reply to The Large One, not you. You then decided to interpret my post as a response to your's. So **** off.

Totally owning Chloe Smith on Newsnight now. Frightening Treasury incompetence. Re. Fuel duty rise U-turn by Osborne.

Indeed.

In 10 years time when all the key financial decisions that affect this country are made by unelected technochrats in Brussels, no doubt we will look back on Paxman and these kind of interviews fondly. Let's all enjoy them while they last.

How does not raising fuel duty 'destroy the recovery' ?

It's the constant u-terms and general indecision which causes a lack of confidence. It's one shambles after another at the moment which cannot be get for anything let alone a recovery.

The fun thing about this thread is people being called lefties for apparently supporting the Labour party, who have not been left for about 25 years.

Whether the tax redution is a good thing or not is not the issue, it's the flummery and U-turns that are showing them up for what they are. Also, saying you are going to increase duty then saying yu won't is not saving you money anymore than someone saying they are going to kick your head and then deciding against it is saving you from a kicking.

So, are you against it?

Yes. I think if you are supposedly sticking the 'the plan' as the poor junior minister kept repeating last night then u-turning on a fuel duty rise to the cost of £550 million of 'departmental savings' (though the poor junior minister didn't know which departments) is a complete f***ing nonsense and makes this government look like they are now trying to make themselves look popular when really they are making themselves look like knee jerk reactionaries.

Should add that if there is money being 'saved' then YES, I do think that any tax rises should be kept in place in the interest of the slowing the increase in the deficit.

The sheer number of U-turns indicate that these "reactive" Treasury policies are being formulated on the back of a fag packet. It also indicates that the Treasury - both MPs and Civil Servants - are badly out of touch with business and the population in general.

This is all rather worrying, especially on the back of Mervyn King's speech this week where he said he was revising the opinions he was espousing only one month ago. It feels like the behaviour of a Government that know there's some major shit around the corner.

When will the politicians learn that by simplifying tax systems and taxpayer bureaucracy a lot more people will be encouraged to take the plunge and start business or hire staff? Labour are saying none of this either, their "ideas tank" is running on empty too.

That interview is an assault. She tried to cover up the truth which makes her look completely inept
