Because Pascal is leaving whether you like it or not. How he leaves is important. He’s been a fantastic servant for 7 years. are you really suggesting that the club should get an extra couple of million and force him to stay for the last year so he leaves pissed off and resentful?

The club have always been very open that they don’t stand in the way of a player leaving if the time is right. Pascal has a year left on his contract, if he’s made it obvious that he doesn’t want to sign any new deal and wishes to go back to Germany then the time is right as this is our last chance to get a fee for him. For that reason they wouldn’t stop his representatives from talking to another club. While this is going on the clubs will be talking about transfer fees as well.

This won’t just happen on this deal it will happen on most deals as it’s a lot easier to establish that everyone is roughly on the same page early to no one wastes any time.


Dortmund are buying a player with one season left on his contract, that and his age will keep the fee well within what Dortmund can afford, rather than any fee being boosted because he’s one of the most creative players in the PL. That is simple football economics.

We’ve seen with Dunk and Stephens, and to a lesser extent Moises to Arsenal last January that we will block a move if we don’t want to lose the player.

It’s not going to be a bargain price either. £10-12 million represents 3 to 4 times what we paid for him after 7 seasons where his on the pitch contributions have already paid back his original transfer fee at least 100 times over. We will probably never get more for a 33 year old with 12 months left on his contract ever.

Bloom and Barber have spent over a decade building up a reputation and a set of credentials. We're different to pretty much every other club in the PL. We respect players, provide a platform to develop their careers and, if they got an offer they can't refuse, we don't stand in their way, so long as we get a suitable offer.
If a player gives us seven years service, is one of the best players in Europe, becomes a legend, is our leading PL goal scorer, is an assist king, plays a full game virtually every game, and raises the standards, and does that over seven years for us, not on huge wages, never causes problems, is a manager's dream, if a player does all that AND he's decided that he wants to go back to his home because, for instance, he wants his family to grow up there, has an offer from a top team with CL football, and gets us a fee far in above the one we paid for, then he goes with our blessing. All we want from him is the chance to say goodbye and thank you. It's that simple.
