Way out west
It should be an interesting programme but I doubt if it will tell me anything that I don't know already.

During my time in Scotland I worked with a number of Rangers fans, they reckoned that a large number of the fans in the stand behind the goal (sorry but I don't remember the name) were either active members of the LVF/UVF or were heavily involved in raising funds for those paramilitary groups. I didn't know that many Celtic fans but am lead to believe that sections of their support had similar involvement with Republican groups. I am not sure if the Panorama programme will concentrate on the terrorist links or the bigotry that is prevalent in the west of Scotland, nonetheless it will undoubtedly prove that any suggestion of the Old Firm joining the Premiership should be rejected totally.

Scotland's Secret Shame

Panorama looks at the tribal loyalties that divide fans of the country's two biggest soccer clubs, Rangers and Celtic.

The fan base for the clubs has historically been determined on religious grounds - Catholic or Protestant - bringing an added troubled dimension to traditional soccer rivalries.

As we embark on the new century, the programme tries to see if there is any sign of a movement away from the hostilities of the past.

Contains strong language.

An amazingly loyal hatred of each other.

You would think, after time, they might move on but clearly not.

Its completely pointless, although considering I'm one of the very few non-Catholic Celtic supports in the world I can say that with more impunity

I haven't worn my Celtic shirt outside of Dublin any time in the past few years after a pretty scary experience paying for petrol in a petrol station in Kesh - one of the few Protestant places in Fermanagh. Its not worth the hassle, which ranges from "Taig scum" (which I'm not, I'm not a Catholic...) to being attacked.

I struggle to understand why anyone is still hung up about an issue 400 years ago.

Try moving on

Martin O'Neill trying to edge around the fact that he really *won't* condemn the violence. If people like him won't, nobody will..

Although its shown directly after a senior Rangers official inducing violence.

This is the thing - its not 400 years. Its 56 years since we left the UK....

I thought someone made reference to something in 1690 ?

Didn't hear that being mentioned... YET... However, it'll come up

as will Celtic fans singing the Fields of Athenry with the addition of republican crud being shouted

..soon after the protestant William of Orange took the English Crown ?

1690 the Battle Of The Boyne, when Williams army fought James II in Ireland.

( Isn't that where the Orange Men get their name ? )

Chairman of Rangers and O'Neill seem to want to deny the issue.

Not much chance of resolving then.

Exactly. Both sides are as f***ing bad as the other

Putting the two of them in a league where they *never meet* is the only potential cure. Neither club will work against the violence.
