I've long suspected this, but last night confirmed it. We might now have the better ground, more fans (at the moment) and arguably better players, but in the end they will always be on top. Two wins in however many years have been mere brief (and ultimately meaningless) highlights in an otherwise constantly losing battle.

1979 - Beating us to the Division 2 title
2002 - Smashing us 5-0 in the most eagerly anticipated league meeting in years
2004 - We win the play-offs to reach Division 1, they win the play-offs to reach the Premier League
2005 - Injury time winner at Withdean
2011 - Sign our top goalscorer on a Bosman and go on to become the first away team to win at the Amex
2012 - FFSMurray-inspired 3-0 win at Selhurst
2013 - Beat us in the play-offs, despite being rank outsiders

We can bang on about Groupon and burning their own town all we like but the sooner we accept that, on the pitch, where it matters, we will always be in their shadow, the better.

This is only true if we keep obsessing about them. WHO CARES ABOUT CRYSTAL PALACE. FORGET THEM, CONCENTRATE ON US.

If we do that we will succeed in achieving our ambitions. While we make matches against them more significant than others, we will continue to under achieve against them. Some people really need to learn that lesson...............

You forgot about their, erm, 'controversial' FA Cup second replay win at Stamford Bridge in 1976, and the 1985 game when they beat us courtesy of being awarded four penalties.

I console myself with the fact that we are better supported than them (what has happened to their support?! Used to match us with 30k crowds and had almost 50k at that game in 79 when they beat us to the title) - and of course we have a far superior stadium. I also genuinely think that in 5-10 years time we will be way ahead of them, established in the Premier League while they are back to mid-table Championship mediocrity.

2 administrations to 0. When we get to the PL, we can say that we have done it on merit, by making difficult decisions and by paying our way.

Just treat them with the contempt they deserve.

At the end of my tether
As they say in financial circles " Past performance is no guarantee of future success"

But in truth, I don't really care that much. So what? Loving the Albion need not mean that you are obliged to hate another one. Let's concentrate on ourselves , make steady but regular progress and bring our club to its full potential

And the first team to win a league match at our new home. Every time we seem to get one up on them they come back and trump it. Ever since the rivalry started (and for a decade or so before that when they were always in the top two divisions and we weren't) they have traditionally been the bigger and better club. At times the gap between us, such as in the 1990s, was huge. Yes we've come on well, but once again the natural order has re-asserted itself and we're a division below them - again. At least it's only one this time.

I was working on Monday and had to travel back on the tube and train with Palace fans. I didn't know the result, in fact at first I thought they'd lost as they were all so quiet and subdued, but then I heard a woman say "We've left them all behind now, Brighton, Charlton, Millwall. They'll never catch us now." Whilst the 'never' might not be true (rarely is in football) as they're going to get about sixty million quid just for existing it's going to be tough.

Still, I'm struggling to give a shit. It was a great season with our highest league finish for thirty years. We can only judge ourselves by our own standards and I hope that soon we'll be adding to our meagre tally of four seasons in the top division. For the time being at least Palace have now got bigger fish to fry (to borrow a phrase from 'Working Class Pride').

Was Brighton and Hove Albion on August 6th 2011.

Other than that I agree 100%.

Not the real one
Let them go up, pay out extortionate wages and then come back down with 60million to keep paying the mercenaries with that 60million. Don't forget they have to pay 2 seasons worth of wages with that, this and next. Holloway got Blackpool relegated with what was a better team than Palace will put together. That PL money is always gonna be there, if we go up next year. It's ours. You know we'll be more sensible with cash than them. More fans better stadium, better place to live. Who has the upper hand?

Inevitable, wasn't it?

Zaha 2 goals in semis and then Zaha wins Pen in final. Well yes we could all have predicted that. But we were 2 point blank saves, a crossbar, and a clearance off the line away from going through. Zaha showed up at the right time for them. But he went missing for 10 matches previously. Is he an Adebayor type?

There is nothing wrong with BHA, you've done great since going up in the Championship, if the season was longer you would of got an auto spot with out doubt, still there is next season where you would expect to finish in the play offs at least, but I hate to say it I think you could do one better and get a top two placing, you have the stadium, got a great fan base, and the foundations for a Premier league football team, just 3/4 top quality players and your squad is there, being an old fan 50+ I remember the games at the Goldstone, you had great singing support there, the whole ground would get in on it, just cant see why you cant choose a certain area at the Amex for a singing block, enough to get the whole end/ ground going, you get that 13th man and you'll be up before you know it.........................SGE

Palace lord It above us all the time but we don't help ourselves being so obsessed with them. The mount of threads bout how they would blow it , holloway is shit , zaha off form , palace off form, wembley tickets and all this is constantly churned out

THIS is my point. It doesn't matter how many nice blue padded seats we've got, and how many fans we've got to sit on them, they're still superior to us in the ONLY area it matters - on the football pitch.

It's like United and their noisy neighbours. City win the league (admittedly not a BAD little victory), United come back the next season and wipe the floor with them. It just seems like that with us and Palace.

Hopefully the stadium, fans blah blah will ensure long term success (hasn't worked for Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds or Forest) but at the moment it feels like this season was our best opportunity for a LONG time to take over and we blew it.

Unfortunately I suspect their 120million + windfall will help more

a glaring oversimplification bordering on hypocrisy, but one I am happy to graciously overlook as I mercifully leave unfettered any crumbs of comfort for those in your position.

A lot of sense spoken here and nice to hear a Brighton fan recognising that Palace just don't care that our gates and ground aren't at your level, it's what happens on the pitch that dictates bragging rights.

However we won't necessarily always have the upper hand on you. Your club is geared for the Prem and will get there one day. Whilst we are there now, we are v likely to go straight back down. I think if Brighton went up you may have more chance of staying there, given you don't have to spend on your ground and facilities like we do, and more money could go towards new players. Plus you'll have a better chance of attracting good players due to your modern set up.

I can't believe this thread:

1. Palace are doing what Palace do, i.e. get promoted to the Prem every seven or eight years having spent one or two season up there. It just so happens they beat us in the Play-Offs this year.
2. The Albion are still in the process of rebuilding EVERYTHING about the club - lost fanbase, training ground, reputation within football, reputation with the media, and this will take time.

Holloway was right when he said "God help us". Fair play to Palace for winning through the play-offs, but they are WOEFULLY short of quality and have simply gone up too early. And Holloway should know all about that having had the Blackpool experience.

The Albion, meanwhile, have a completed 30,000 stadium with fans with another season of experience under their belts too. This is a great job for any manager. It would not surprise me to see us pass Palace on the way down in a year's time, although I grant you that will depend upon this Poyet business getting sorted sharpish.

I feel certain that Palace and Albion will have many great matches to come as both teams get stronger.

A sensible approach going forward. Brighton are in a fantastic position given the turmoil of the past decades. It is bizarre that some cling jealously to Palace's admins rather than focus on this. To talk about 'merit' is absurd. Palace achieved promotion under Coppell and Noades on a shoestring, and it was this that formed the foundation of any latter success. They achieved promotion again on a modest budget and with youth players such as Salako, Southgate and Shaw as the cornerstone.

The first admin occurred as a result of Noades selling a Premier League club, there wholly on 'merit' to a fantasist who all but ripped apart years of hard work. The seller himself pocketing the majority of the fruits of that labour for his own business interests and real estate portfolio. The next promotion came again on a shoestring, spearheaded by the modest signing of Andrew Johnson as part of the sale of one of our academy stars. It all began to unravel once more when a substantial part of the club's income stream was reneged on by a third party, and the owner's own investments failed. By the time the club went into admin, they were far from lording it up Cardiff style. Again, the club was kicked in the nuts by admin, not profiting from it. It's astonishing that the club has survived despite admin, not profited because of the actions that led to it.

Which brings us to this promotion. If you can pick any club in the division this year that has achieved more on 'merit' than Palace, I'd like to hear it. Brighton? How so, exactly? If your decades of handouts from the Bloom family finally go tits up due to any personal problems Tony might encounter, you won't find me in the queue demanding that any of your club's achievements over the past few years be etched from history.

Personally, I'd like to see both our clubs prosper in the Premier League. It strikes me that if you want to pick clubs who have stained the history of football more in recent memory, both of ours are way down the list.
