Blimey, repeat photo posts, pedantry on road names, file sizes all over the show.

This thread is going downhill.

Queens Gardens 1928 … no cars , children play in the street . A different age.

Today… the houses have been done up , the corner newsagent is now a Mexican eatery and an ugly waste bin takes prominence.

The main difference (and the main reason there aren't kids playing in the street) is the enormous line of cars parked down the road in the modern photo.

At the end of my tether
I found this on Wikipedia Commons and I cannot vouch for it but it says :
“A view of Castle Square in the centre of Brighton, part of the English seaside city of Brighton and Hove. This area has been a hub of commercial activity since the mid-18th century. It took its name from the Castle Inn, demolished in 1823”
I have never heard of a real castle in Brighton. Good question though.

Does anyone know of any old photos of Pelham Square?

I searched through the forum but can only find the aerial view from St Bartholemews church, which just shows a couple of Pelham Square trees, and the photo of the house on the corner of Trafalgar Street and Pelham Street with a tiny bit of the Pelham Square fench in the foreground.

There might be something here? I'll let you go through them all!

Interesting article - and some great photos! - on the BBC website today about Brighton's secret tunnels. I'm sure I can't be the only one old enough to remember the grotty old downstairs station toilets with the mosaic floor in the passage that led to Trafalgar Street

I remember them as being a huge space with big wooden doors on the cubicles that you had to put 2p in to open? I also seem to remember that there was that horrible public toilet stench due to a lack of ventilation.

If the tiles are all in place, it would be amazing to clean them up and open up the space (not as toilets) as part of the redevelopment. Maybe creating something like they have now under London Bridge station.
