At the end of my tether
Haddington Street ,Hove …. Off Blatchington Road. C1920 , people queuing for a silent film

The Empire was evidently popular but could not compete when the “talkies” came in . It closed in the 1930s . Today there is this . The cinema was where the blank wall is …

The Empire Cinema, 1a Haddington St, Hove. When the cinema closed in 1932, my Grandad bought it and he, my Nan, Mum and her brothers and sisters lived there.

Does 1a still exist?

This is the back of the gym on the left then the terrace starts at No 3. I often took a short cut down Haddington St to get to the Stirling Arms (my local) but never noticed the house numbers until looking on GE just now.

It was. SS Brighton became an Odeon.
I was taken to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarves on ice there, around 1960. I was just 4 years old. The dwarves were taller than me!

I saw that 7 years later at The Regent (the Disney 7 years cycle), the first movie I can kinda remember, age 2 or 3.

We went to that old Odeon in 1970 to see The Aristocats.

"The workmen eventually succeeded in shoring up her gaping gable end" - there is an euphemism you don't hear very often!

Slightly off topic but seems best place to post today’s BBC Archive post.

To the west of that, I think was Fiat dealer's Tilley’s, the site later became Oakley who sold high end Volva Penta powerboat engines. Dull information for the day .
