It should be designed to look like the Allianz Arena, so that the residents of Falmer have something nice to look at

I watched a documentary on discovery channel a while back showing them building that. Very impressive indeed.

Looking at the decision letter ...

"No event shall take place at the Community Stadium with an attendance in excess of 22,500 people".

so with this condition written in, we'll never be able to expand falmer.

FFS

lets go to sheepcote instead

Despite the impression that LDC and FPC have been giving that it's all about AONB status, planning rules these days are mainly about transport.

22,500 is just about the top limit that a stadium at Falmer can accommodate within the constraints of a sustainable transport strategy.

We'll never know for certain what the limit might have been at Sheepcote Valley - but, without decent public transport access and no way of controlling on-street parking in the area, it's quite possible that a planning application for a 22,500 seater stadium at Sheepcote Valley would have been turned down. My guess is that you'd be hard pushed to accommodate more that 12-15,000 at Sheepcote.

yes, i realise that, i was just being sarky.
however, once falmer is written out of the AONB boundaries, it opens up other possibilities

The thing is that this limit is set by the current planning permission.

In order to expand, another planning permission would be required.

It will very much depend on how the transport plan works out in the first few years we are there.

Those who currently park within the exclusion zone at Withdean should take note of this point.

So, Falmer has it's own railway station and is adjacent to a dual carriageway outside of the City center, so why is it limited to 22,500 seats? I'm sure there are many other stadiums with higher capacities that don't have that.

I would imagine any mid size modern stadium is built so that expansion is relatively easy - if only to make the developers some extra cash down the line..

Obviously the current decision would not allow this, however the future is the future, who knows.

I would like to think in the future things will change as 22k is far to small, also i think far to many on here are underestimating the potential of us big time???

Populations have risen untold, plus even before we more than showed our huge potential. Many of you are goner be very surprised by our falmer crowds;)

It all comes down to acceptable levels of car parking. Planning rules have changed. Until quite recently, it was possible to obtain planning permission for major developments on the basis that enough car parking spaces would be provided to serve the number of people who would use the site. These days, the rules basically restrict the number of car parking spaces that can be provided and don't allow developers to rely on nearby on-street parking.

The London Olympic venues will provide NO car parking for spectators, other than a small amount of disabled parking .

precisely and if the club made an arrangement with southern rail like they did the first season we played at withdean to incorperate free train travel to the game with your match ticket, that would reduce the traffic impact dramatically.

but surely it would not be beyond the wit of man to crank up the rail services and expand the park & ride into places such as Lewes, mid sussex, worthing etc?

Also, is it not easier to get planning permission to improve upon something than to build it in the first place?

Or am I on smack?

That arrangement still applies at Withdean and will apply at Falmer. The problem is that, whilst Falmer Station has the capacity to deal with about 3,500 passengers travelling to and from a match, it can't cope with more. Imagine the queues after a match.

Lord B might be able to answer this.
The planning permission that has been given - is there much flexibility for the design? Could (theoretically) we end up in a SMALLER stadium than the 22500 (approx) one that is proposed at the moment.....? Or do we have to build EXACTLY what we've put forward?

The design of the stadium was one of the factors that the Secretary of State identified as mitigating the adverse effects of building it in the AONB. Some minor modifications will no doubt be negotiable with the local planning authority (the City Council), but basically we will get something very similar to what we have seen so far.
