How's the knee Notters ? Mine is shagged now. Slight runner's knee from return from long injury lay off.
Got it 10 days ago. Had 6 days off before last Saturday's Parkrun and it felt fine by 9am. No problem running the Parkrun but afterwards pain for 2 days that reduced with ice. Won't keep me out for long but I'm trying hard not to run till it's fully happy.
Working on stretches for quads and hips and now started strengthening. Two socks filled with pebbles from the beach and tied together. Wrap round ankle, sit on table and doing leg raises ad nauseum or until the wife screams at me to stop.

Feeling ready otherwise and still on for a Parkrun win attempt on March 12th.

Thank you for asking!

It's been ok, and I've been doing the exercises, though I haven't done any very long runs as keep getting colds etc.
Was fine for parkrun on Saturday though didn't break my record (very muddy and lots of dogs mind).
A recent Runners World podcast suggested 1-leg squats are also very good for strengthening the knees?
Have to admit I've never really had any pain afterwards (not 'bad' pain anyway), just while I'm running.

I'm now seriously thinking I might be able to do a sub-20min 5k with a bit more work so any tips welcome? I'm also sussing out the quietest and flattest local parkruns.
There are a couple in Bradford with <100 average finishers, on tarmac and winning times of around 20-22 mins, though they have >100m ascent.

Wish I had started running at 16 rather than 36 :(

Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent pair of trail running shoes? I'm signed up for the full Steyning Stinger in a few weeks, so need to invest.

Unless we get biblical rain on or near the day it won't be too bad generally, but there are always a few sections on the Stinger that are very slippery/muddy regardless (or underwater :lolol:) so I'd definitely have something fairly grippy otherwise you will end up on your arse a few times. The first/last mile or so in particular is usually horrendous ! As Simgull says get to a shop and try a few for fit and comfort (and tell them what you're doing) - ideally you need something with the type of aggressive lugs you see on the Salomon Speedcross, Inov8 Terra Ultra, Roclite G275 or similar IMO.

I swear by innov8 trailtalon for light off-road and xtalon for the heavy stuff

I did the Stinger in road shoes once :wrong::wrong::wrong::moo:

I clicked on this thread by accident; it's been a while since I came here deliberately! I never really recovered from a series of nothing injuries and age (60) is now slowing me down. Currently suffering from 'persistant' Covid and not able to do any running at all. Iwill get back to it soon though...

You can't keep a good man down! My experience is that wives are usually right.

The joys of club membership. Last night hill circuits session. Not only does the coach give you your split times but he writes down everyone's finishing time and then reads them out comparing them with the times for the previous week. This - and of course chasing/being chased - really increases motivation and I pretty much emptied the tank in a way that I'd never do on a solo effort. Great fun in a feeling-sick-at -the-end sort of way. (Am assuming you ae not doing your Arena 80 night at the moment. I would anticipate that they are extremely competitive and intense. And that's just those women.)

Good sessions indeed. Right up your street. May I have the temerity to suggest that you don't run every Parkrun flat out on the back of those sessions? You'll need to recover.
I'm avoiding track till April but looking forward to getting that exhilarating buzz racing round my body.
Now to loop my stretch band round the bannisters, put my poster of the back of your head In front of me and put that knee to work.

Pretty much the only time that I've been a motivational tool (as opposed to just a tool).

I'm wondering how many PRs will happen tomorrow. The club is descending on Bevendean - or planning to. That course is bad enough on a perfect running day. I'm anticipating that maybe some of the prom courses might have an awful lot of stones and stuff washed up. I think the Hove prom in particular has this problem? As for not going flat out, I take on board the message. And then some old ******* will pass me and............ (well you know the rest).

I only have to read the posting on here to realise that I'm in a really lucky (in terms of injuries) streak right now. But I certainly want to stay fit to go into combat with a fully fit knocky.

I'll need hard work to match your current time for 2022 and a miracle once you better it. I'm getting used to the back of your head.

With an hour to high tide and the wind increasing the Prom is looking unlikely.

A rare visit to Preston park. Impressed by the overall quality and size of the field (460 or so). 21.17 just scraped me over the 80% AG on a windy day and a course with that mean little hill. Quite pleased - but not as pleased, I think, as the VW55-59 who clocked a 94%!

A rare parkrun outing today keeping Ninja Elephant company - and taking a rare 'win' by finishing ahead.

Bruno First Dog, too [emoji106]

Back on the hills tomorrow for more Moyleman training. Not too long to go until the best race off the year!

^^Followed that up with 17 miles this morning, a decent bit of time on the feet and nearly 1,200ft of climbing.

Headwind was a bugger at times and the speeds definitely picked up as I pushed on. As I came down the hill from Truleigh twice and the second time, I feared for a tree falling on me, the amount they were swaying

Having been running for more than 10 years, I finally gave in and signed up for a marathon (Manchester in 6 weeks).
I've been following the Daniel's running formula (4 week cycle for upto 40 miles per week) and today ran a 1:20:40 half marathon in fairly windy conditions.

My question is, given it's my first marathon and the longest run in the plan so far has been just under 17 miles, should I stick to the final 6 weeks of the plan or should I be adding at least 1 20 miler to give myself confidence that the wheels won't fall off after 16 miles?

Whoever persuaded you to run a marathon? :lolol:

Glad to see the training is going well and 1:20 is more than decent, in my eyes.

I was thinking about what you've asked this morning while out for my own LSR – the two guys I'm running Manchester with are first timers too, but are cracking on with plans that, I think, go beyond 17 miles. For the first marathon I did, the distances in the plan were in time, not mileage. So I ran three hours, which – from memory – was about 18 miles. I think once you've got to that sort of distance (and you've knocked out a few of them) you should be fine, but I know there are a lot of 20-mile races in the lead-up to marathon season and that's not a coincidence. It's all down to personal preference and how you're feeling. But, if it was me, I would probably running a 20-miler just for the mental boost and bearing in mind the 'wall' can hit as late as 19...

Me? I'm running Moyleman marathon as my last long run/confidence booster two weeks before Manchester :wrong: :nono:

Hardcore run in today's conditions. I bet those trees were more fearing the damage you'd do to them, if they fell.

On marathon training I always did 20m 3 weeks out but not sure it did me any good.
