Worthing PR: nasty cross wind. 20:40 (SB)/82.66% age grade(SB and PB). Please could you update the table Gaffer? Hope Hove Park went well.
Shall I give up now?
I was on the Prom to witness the 300th Run by Simgull
Didn't see him for long as ended 2 and a half minutes behind. I had a progressive run going through the gears for each mile 7:58, 7:45, 7:28 Failed by 30 seconds to get back into the 70%AG but enjoyed a 6:17 run in ending at sub 6:00 pace
It's a long and spluttering struggle back this time and I'm a very naughty boy to have neglected all exercise bar walking for 6 months. Still feel I'm capable of winning Parkrun within 2 weeks. Dream high.
Now off to sit outside Marocco's in the NSC Running Team Bus with a flask of tea to support the Half Marathoners struggling home into a cold brisk easterly.
Another newbie question. Should you get properly fitted for trainers, or is it ok to buy online? There seems to be conflicting advice here.
Back in the autumn, I was really delighted with my PB by around 16 minutes of 1:48.45 in the 2021 Brighton half-marathon. Today, not quite sure what to think of my 2022 Brighton half-marathon time just now of 1:48.45 lol, except why didn’t you dip you great eejit
Go to an independent running shop
Try on as many pairs as you can
Go for the ones that are most comfortable.
That's been the approach that I've had for nearly 20 years and it seems to work for me. Apart from a few like-for-like replacements, I nearly always go to The Jog Shop for new shoes and nine times out of 10 they are spot on and last me ages (c.1,000+ miles).
Good luck!
Interesting. Mine get replaced by 350 miles, perhaps I’m losing pairs prematurely?
Tough conditions on the HM today - Easterly wind made the final 5k tough. Good to see Simgull knocky1 on the way round.
There isn’t a predefined mileage IMO, depends on make, model, use, gait, impact (inc weight) of runner etc etc. I always go by feel - if the bounce has gone, they get reduced to being used for casual walks etc before going off for recycling. I find the Cliftons typically start to go at around 5-600 miles (probably less now I’m such a fat lardy ****er).
Shall I give up now?
I’ve put on a bit of weight since being injured just before Christmas. I was up to 13 stone 9 this morning - I’m usually hoovering just above or below 13.
I might start using my Clifton Bondai’s up to 400 or 500. They’re so bulky they could withstand a nuclear blast.

Maybe I hang on to mine too long – literally run them into the ground –*but I refuse to bow to the whole 'you need to replace your shoes every 500 miles' schtick that, funnily enough, shoe manufacturers push.
For me, I've never had an injuries or problems with shoes that effectively have no grip on them and by the time they get properly run in, the way they mould to my feet makes them even more comfortable. I would probably consider mine new after 350 miles!
Well done on today – cracking performances all round.
Can I politely ask if you are one of the “lighter” variety?

I had planned to come into town to get properly fitted but ended up buying my Clifton 8’s online direct from Hoka.
Hoka provide a link to a site where you can measure your feet. It basically involves placing your feet on an a4 piece of paper while using the phone’s camera.
The site said I would be best with a size 10 and half but when the trainers arrived they were too small. Too short and too narrow in the mid foot.
So tomorrow I’m going to try out a few pairs in an actual shop.
I’ve returned the Clifton’s and now will go with whatever feels best.
So to bring this to a conclusion…
I went to a running shop and got my gait analysis.
I am neutral.
Tried on loads of pairs of trainers and ended up with Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22.
Absolutely love them but Brooks were not even on my radar initially.
After doing the Brighton HM in my solar boosts, I can’t wait to start running in my Brooks this week.
I always thought Brooks GTS were a support shoe?
