The first big "direction decision" of marathon training plan time for me today - go out in to the wind or do the second half in to it. From where I am having it behind at the end involves a more industrial, rolling route in to Shoreham and back whereas coming back in to it is out on the seafront to Roedean and back. After last year's disasterous last 10k in to a strong Easterly in the race I've decided to try and do the second half in to the wind this year, a sort of negative effort run rather than negative split. The wind howling woke me up at 6am this morning so this could be interesting, time wise!

Bloody Worthing!
Wonderfully, I was up and out of bed in time to cycle over to Worthing for their parkrun today. Obviously the wind was a serious factor in the first almost half, but also a touch of laziness set in. It was clear that I wasn't catching the guy in 7th and wasn't likely to be unable to fend off the chap running behind me in 9th. I was settled in 8th after about 1.5kms, and I wasn't going to be managing a sub-18 effort so I was kind of cruising into the wind. I ran the first KM in 3:47, the second in 3:58. I had a mental word with myself and cracked on with 3:45 and 3:29 for each of the last two. I believe in a few weeks I should be capable of getting back under the 18 minute mark on the right course, in the meantime I'll stick to my training plan and get plenty of cycling done. 20 miles in total for the day, but a nice rest tomorrow on the cycling front with just a morning run with big nuts to get in the legs.

Good to see Garry Nelson's teacher donning the high vis this morning.

Thanks - that was a really good performance from you in those conditions. TBH it was a pretty good performance from me too in those conditions! Another splendid turnout along the prom - great to see.
Rather than stay indoors and feel sorry for myself I too ventured out on my bike today and managed a 20 mile round trip half of which was into that bloody wind. Early signs are that my knee preferred the bike to running - I only wish the rest of me did too.

Good weekend. 21:39 at Hove Park (SB if anyone is doing table updates) and a solid 12 miles on the Downs this morning after boozy dinner at The Urchin last night. Love running on days like this, bit of sun, soft underfoot and a decent temperature.

First proper long run (17.6 miles) in a very long time. Feel pretty broken now but glad to be well ahead of schedule for Brighton in 3 months. I was joined by Ninja Elephant for 10 miles as we reminisced about the Priestfield & Withdean years naming a load of really shocking players as we made our way through Shoreham.

I’ll ease off a little this week but In two Sunday’s time I’ll look to run for 2 hours 30 minutes.

Naming really shocking Albion players, I now understand why you needed such a long run.

Looking at my Strava feed everyone I follow is smashing out tremendous runs at the moment. Having trouble keeping up on the kudos button. It’s almost like it’s some kind of post Christmas race training season.

Headed out yesterday back in time to stretch, roll the legs, soak in a hot bath whilst listening to the football.
New plan to leave Sunday free to be rested for the Monday Withdean track sessions BUT my 14 month absence will be a week longer with 45mph winds and torrential rain set for 6pm tomorrow. I’ll do them on the seafront earlier.

Some of the players big nuts and I reminisced about probably haven't been spoken about in years. :lolol: The glory days of Ian Culverhouse playing sweeper wearing number 7, Glenn Thomas' nightmare at Brentford, Mark Ormerod just in general! Marvellous and a good run - not to mention unusually early in the day for me!

Once again, I managed to drag myself into work at 10am, having been at Worthing for a parkrun on a saturday morning at 9am and then be up and out in time to meet the big fella yesterday. If there was any doubt before, there can't be now. Motivation is the key!

The Priestfield back 5 of:-

Mark Ormerod
Peter Smith
Stuart Tuck
Derek Allan
Gary Hobson

Add to that a midfield of:-

Paul Armstrong
Kerry Mayo
John Westcott
Darragh Ryan

Upfront
Robbie Reinelt
Craig Maskell

It’s a bloody good job Doncaster were perhaps the worst team in English history.

And just looking at that list - I really can't believe that ANY of them would have been a competitive 5k runner. Peter Smith maybe, he loved his marauding runs from full back. He might have been a challenge, I seem to remember John Westcott having a bit of pace about him (absolutely no ball control whatsoever though!). Tuck, Allan and Hobson could have run sub-20 if it was a relay - maybe. :lolol:

The only thing I'm smashing is the complete opposite of RED January. At this rate it'll be a while before I get a SB figure in the table.

I did a very very icy 18k yesterday. I've never experienced conditions quite like it. It absolutely poured with rain on Saturday and then dropped below freezing overnight into Sunday. This meant there was basically a fine sheen of ice on most of the pavements. About 1k into my run I completely missed seeing a patch of black ice and ended up on my arse, thankfully I had a bag on my back to break my fall but I've got a couple of bruises to show for it.

The last 10k was with my running group, which made things a little bit easier as we ended up being each other's ice spotters. There was an amusing point when we got near the bottom of the hill and got a bit over confident before we suddenly all found ourselves sliding along. I had to use a bin to stop me falling!

I hope there's not too many more days like that.

Oh dear, having had my ankle deconstructed due to sepsis five years ago and two ops since I've just got back into running having gained about two stone and aged 58!

Weight is slowly coming off, no major changes to diet other than less alcohol, but my 5k times seem way over the rest of you guys on here! I'm doing 40-42 mins (running and walking couch 2 5k stylee), obviously it's coming down each time, having started at 45 mins but I don't think I'll get anywhere near 20-25 mins, I'd be delighted sub 35.

Well done for bouncing back from those nasty set-backs. The only thing that matters is that you are getting out and participating and seeing some of the benefits. There is a mixed bag of runner here old/young, slow/fast,
longer distance/shorter distance and we all are here to encourage others, share successes and offer advice when it helps. At any given time a number of us are crocked, so a 35 minute 5k might be beyond the capabilities of any of us at some time or other.

I seem to remember that Tuck buggered up his ankle in the last season at the Goldstone and was hobbling for most of the time after that. On one occasion I thought they were going to put the screens around him when he went down injured........... but I later learned that the bullet had been reserved for someone else.

Good work. Doesthe ankle need a lot of TLC after each run. After 4 months off with Rheumatoid Arthritis 4 years back I was happy to run sub 38 and spent longer massaging the foot. ankle and toes afterwards.
