Hello Runners
Ok, I have decided to try and take up running. I live a stones throw from the beach so plan to start by running along the promenade (nice and flat) to get my non existent fitness levels up and take it from there. I was hoping someone might be able to recommend a decent but fairly cheap pair of wireless headphones and also I'm after either a belt or a wrist holder for my iPhone 4S. I was looking on sports direct and they are pretty cheap but I don't mind paying a bit more for a recommended one? Lastly, are any of the running apps like Nike+ actually any good? Any other advise for a newbie would be great
I have an armband holder for my iPod, which would also fit my phone. It's reasonably comfy to wear and enables my headphone cable to go neatly up through my sleeve and under my t-shirt.
You got yourself a new pair of running shoes? That would be the most important bit of kit.
Yup I bought a pair of standard Nike running shoes for £18. No point going mental yet as there is always the chance I might get bored of it quickly (I don't think I will just saying) my aim is to run to and from work by the spring (3 miles each way) and once I've nailed that ill take it to the next step, if my legs don't fall apart!

Right, the new treads arrived today (bargin for £18 they are actually really nice and comfortable) as did my 'bumbag' which cost me £4. I got home from work and this is no joke, as I walked in the door my wife handed me a freshly poured pint of cider. I honestly couldn't believe it, it looked amazing. I was having none of it, I went and got changed, found some earphones, started the running app with a bit of foo fighters and I set off! I had set myself a landmark about a mile away (or so I thought) and went for it. As soon as I turned onto the promenade and headed west I felt like I was going to die. Icey wind blasting down my throbbing throat, spit falling from my chin, it hurt, it really did! I reached the target and turned back and felt slightly better knowing I was on my way back! Back to the front door, my lungs felt like they were bursting and my groin hurt? I was panting like a dog, my mrs was in hysterics. I checked the app, I ran 1.6 miles in 15 minutes yet it felt like I'd run 50 miles in 10 hours!
An hour has gone by now, breathing returned to normal, I'm looking at that cider I can't bring myself to drink it, throat hurts. You know what? I can't wait to do it all again! Incredibly motivated to beat that time and feel less f***ed. One thing I noticed almost straight away was boredom. How the hell do you guys run marathons and such? Thanks for all advice by the way

Could anyone recommend a decent armband that can hold ID, keys, a small amount of change and an iPhone? I can either find one that holds the phone or one that holds the rest, never both. Does such a product exist or will I have to buy two armbands and look like a bit of a muppet?

First of all, well done for getting out there, that's the biggest step. And to start going west? Wow, that's brave, because I've been along there today and it's tough.
You have to start somewhere, and my introduction to running was much like you. I Just decided to go out for a run, and lasted about one mile, but gradually over time I went further and further each run, and before I knew it, eight months later, I'd run the London marathon. That was over 10 years ago, and Brighton will only be my second full marathon, but I feel so much better prepared this time around because I've just put the miles in.
The boredom is an issue for loads of people, but I manage to keep my mind occupied with all sorts of things. I can quite happily keep plodding for 2-3 hours without getting bored. And when you are miles away from home (as I thought when I was in Rottingdean the other morning), there isn't much you can do apart from head back, and you want to do that as quickly as you can.
How were the trainers? Hopefully they will be OK, but if you carry on, I would suggest going to The Jog Shop for a proper fitment - it is amazing how different trainers feel so different. I had years of New Balance – which I thought were comfortable – before switching to Nikes, which are even better. Nike+ is fine for me, but I know there are loads out there. A lot of people I know use a Garmin, which seem to be more accurate, but I know mine is pretty much spot on.
The seafront is great for running, but I try to vary routes a bit, which might help prevent the boredom? Hove Park is great, and the hills are a bit of a challenge without being too intimidating.

I find after a few minutes my mind starts to wonder, a good tune always helps though and I can imagine the promenade can get fairly boring after a while. Don't forget the warm down, makes a world of difference the following days.
I bought one by "iGadgitz" on Amazon (for the Galaxy S3 but I checked and they also do an iPhone version) which comes with a special key pocket, I'm sure there's room for ID/notes behind the phone as well.
Like I said I bought this belt thing that has a pocket for iPhone and one behind it for change and stuff, was £4 from sports direct, lightweight and did the job! Look on sport direct running accessories
