OK JUNE 13TH NSC Hove Parkrun Challenge it is.

Remember the idea is for all entrants to attempt a best time for at least the year and to use the other NSC runners as pacers or competition to achieve that. So far we have the following entrants and I have added my target.

Good cause, choice between 14.5k and 9k. My first run of more than 12k since the marathon. If anyone out there's already doing it, any idea what the course is like?

A bit obsessed with MapMyRun at the moment after spotting it on Nathan Jones's Twitter.

If I can get someone to take my kids to their various Saturday activities I'll come along. Gives me a month and a bit to organise it but put me down as a "maybe".

What to aim for time wise? My fastest 5k ever was the second half of a 10k and was 26.51. Haven't got near that again. I ran 5k this morning in 28.12 and felt like I was at my max. Splits very consistent at 5.37 / 5.37 / 5.40 / 5.35 / 5.41 per k. I just couldn't seem to go faster than that. With a return to some intervals, the adrenaline of a race and pacers and a little more weight to lose do people reckon sub 25 is possible? Seems a lot to shave off but I don't see the point in easy goals.

We seem to have been roughly parallel over the last few months, other than you following a more structured plan and me just winging it. I had a few weeks where it didn't really feel like I was improving and then, last week, I seemed to move forward again, notching a 24:38 5km (as the first half of a 10.5km loop) and then, later in the week I completed my regular 5.1mi loop at an average pace of 8:45/mi, which was the first time since the end of March I'd managed to get below 9:00/mi for the route.

For a fast 5km time, for me at least, it's a matter of getting out there and seeing how I feel. If you're having a good/bouncy day then go for it, otherwise don't. I did 6.5mi yesterday and thought I would blast the first mile to see how fast I could go, but I quickly realised my legs just weren't receptive to that so I tried to just run the whole thing at a vaguely even pace instead.

I'm sure you'll do it, hombre. Try cutting it up? Do 1k as quick as you can. Take a 90-second (or two-minute if you're breathing hard) break. Do that between six and eight times and count your splits.

Welcome Mr Banana and Guiness Boy!
Unfortunately Guiness Boy has exposed a problem with the NSC Challenge. The course is not ideal for PBs unless its a strong South South West wind. The hill of the park means you cannot set a steady pace and also be used to a half mile steady up gradient with a great downhill for the finish. I would say you have to add 20 to 45 seconds onto a flat course pb. So the plan is to get your best time for Hove Park 5K.

Haywards Heath 10 for me this Sunday. Has anyone done this race before?

Not personally but got loads of clubmates doing it. It's part of the Mid Sussex Marathon (10m in East Grinstead today, 10m HH Sun and 10k Burgess Hill on Monday). I'll probably end up marshalling on Monday

I will be from now on. Was ok up to an hour and 20 mins but seem to have hit the magic nipple pain duration. Nothing much heroic about the timing though, we're off to the Foodie Festival later so that run has bought me at least two lots of street food and some gin tasting.

While I don't have a particularly sensitive nipples, I have had a couple of painful experiences in the past and I thought I would do some research before doing the Brighton marathon. I came across Tribesports who made great claims about the anti-chaffing features of their tops and the reviews seemed to back this up. I used it for the marathon and the nipples were as fresh as daisy afterwards. They recently started to supply Parkrun with their t-shirts.

They are a bit pricey, the short sleeve top plus postage less £10 for new members was £18.

I'm sure a tub of vaseline has to be the cheapest nips (and other chafed parts) option. Any sign of rain and I slap loads of the stuff on...

Ran a 20 sec PB, 38min 33sec finished 79th out of 1900. with better conditions could of been lower, still chuffed and a great event.

Really good effort. Knocking 20 seconds of your pb must have given you quite a buzz!
