One that Harry didn't mention ... but I bet he knows, is Egg's The Civil Surface. One of the few rock albums that features a french horn player (the same instrument that Can's Holger Czukay played when he was a classical musician), Egg were part of the ever fruitful Canterbury scene.

Their leader, Mont Campbell, hit the headlines a few years back when his daughter (from Lewes) was killed fighting with the Kurds

and click thru the whole album

a cut and paste.....

this album the firemans curse along with the first s/t lp... I had on walkman early eighties
during my sadf national service in and around
the continuing conflict southern angola/northern namibia....
somehow with all the substances changing my view constantly of
the ancient kraton landscapes comprising southern africa
this music just fitted in and formed a very technicolored pineal meta-movie-narrative....
hunters and collectors were so ahead of anything else in the postmodern post punk category
oneday in the future academics will be researching that period's zeitgeist through
the lyrical ambience of this and the first album
but for now thanks for uploading and greetings from tasmania

This was pretty mainstream, and frowned apon because of the 'gay' label applied during the big Gov Aids campaign, but they broke new ground I thought

....I know, I know, eighties....but we saw where it was going.

First time I saw the vid of this I was gobsmacked. Living in Vancouver at the time, listening to college radio and going to whatever strange gig was on offer, not considering it strange. And totally cut off from the tabloid world. Shocked later to see how mean and low and cheap people can be.

This is sublime.

Cheers!

Some of those bands never broke through, or had any real success, even though it was deserved. One of those was Strife. they were a three piece band, apparently from Bootle. In the late 60s/early 70s they were the go to support act for gigs at Liverpool Uni, Friday/Saturday night dances/concerts - and in those years the main acts we had were stella - Pink Floyd, The Who, The Kinks, The Byrds. Derek and The Dominoes, Jethro Tull and more.
As often or not, Strife would be the support act. Never really appreciated - everybody was just waiting for the main act - but they were actually very good. As far as three piece guitar lead bands, up with the best of them. OK, forget the flared trousers, the huge sideburns and the Hair Bear Bunch hair cuts, they were good. It might not do them much good now, but putting up a few links (sound quality not good) is at least a bit of a tribute - hope a few people listen.

Two bands that I only had on long lost cassettes are Mute Drivers and the Playn Jayn.
Cassettes pirated by a workmate and absolutely played to death at work and at home.
Struggled to track down any decent online copies of them since.

Other bands listened to a lot at the time (not sure how obscure these are)
Ministry
Mega City Four
Newtown Neurotics

Happy memories.

Not a band but the first album from the Beggars Banquet label.

Notable mentions.
The Reaction - Precursor to Talk Talk - with the original version of the song Talk, Talk.

The Nosebleeds - Morrisey’s first band

Michael Schenker lives in Saltdean, I worked in the house next door last year, I hadn’t actually heard of him until then.
The house he lives in I have also worked in, was owned previously by an Albion fan, not sure if he’s on here though.

Captain did live in Bath Street by the Seven Dials when I lived in the next road, this was late 80s, I was told he has moved away from Brighton.

If the Captain has moved away, he’s back frequently, I’ve seen him around the city in the past 12 months. Ive also seen Oxy Moron around and at several Brighton gigs, perhaps he’s visiting him.

Only going back to 2006 but Furyon are a decent metal band originating in Brighton, somehow they’ve not quite made it as big as I think they deserve to, seen them a couple of times, excellent.
