If you ever went to a football in the 80s or attended a demo in the 80s/early 90s you'd know this was absolutely true, they were many who were simply hired thugs rather than keepers of the peace.

Not proud of it but it still makes me happy that at least some of them got a shoeing at the Poll Tax demo.

So when other simply hired thugs get stuck in, furthering a cause that you prefer, that is ok - usual double standards on this thread.

South Yorkshire police. Cover up and lying on Hillsborough, Orgreave, Rotherham etc. Dodgy police force.

Good Morning, Soulman,
I would be a little careful in going to print about accusing others of lying . .It seems that this was certainly the case at Hillsborough, but has it been proven here? Yes, miners and their supporters will say that it happened, but then would their equally biased view be any more believable? IF there has been a cover-up, and I stress IF, sadly this is all part of human nature, when at times organisations are accused of whatever, and the automatic reaction is to look inwards, and first and foremost protect your mates. How many of us on here can with total honesty say that they have not done the same, albeit on much lower level, or would not do so. Obviously there are parameters, and when crossed, whistle blowers do eventually sum up the courage to lift the lid.

It was admitted in court, at the trial of the 95 miners that lies were told, also few people have ever challenged the reports that witness statements were altered and 'aligned'. The IPCC and the DPP have since accepted that there was perjury, I think Soulman is on fairly safe litigious ground.

Sounds like you think there needs to be an inquiry.

Ok, thanks. I don't doubt that this sort of thing goes on - see my other post about what organisations do.

Not really, I don't think it's okay to be honest and that's what makes me squirm a bit. I shouldn't like the fact that there were protestors engaged in violence but part of me knows that the police got what was coming. I'm not a police hater but my encounters with them and experience of them during that time wasn't pleasant.

If wrong-doing has taken place, then of course that would need to be exposed, but it is for me a difficult balance. I just wonder if spending out millions, with the usual time delays, resignations etc etc is really worth it. Doubtless some feel that it is, and others are simply using it for political gain -the tax payer will always pick up the bill. After much wrangling/amendments to suit convenience, etc a report will then be issued; someone will step up and say lessons have been learnt, and we all go away and wait for the next one, human nature being as it is.

I do see that you are trying to be fair, but the post confirms the idea of double standards.

Then I'll just have to hold my hands up then! In fairness, you are being quite binary about it, like everything else there is a spectrum and I think that's what I'm trying to get at - I can't completely condone violence but when I look at the recipients it tempers any condemnation.

So all the coppers injured were ones who "had it coming" were they , they'd all done things that warranted it, yes ?
