Well since everyone seems obsessed with population size. The commentator tonight compared them to Rotherham.

They currently sit 3rd in League One.

But as anyone with an ounce of sense knows, it doesn't quite work like that. Not unless Rotherham United are currently made up of part time players.

thought it was Rochdale!

Incidentally, who would represent the world’s top international sides, pound for pound based on population? Obviously at the bottom of the list would be the likes of India and China with their massive populations and not very good football teams, but who’s at the top?

Iceland, 62nd in the world with a population of less than 350,000 must be up there, as must Croatia - 18th with a 4.4m population.

Wales 19th with 3.3m.

Indeed Iceland and Croatia, Uruguay (3,4m) is also very strong considering their size. Likewise Portugal (10m). Denmark (6m) could also be considered. Faroe Islands should also be mentioned, 50k population and 10+ professionals playing abroad is impressive and they rarely lose with big numbers. They used to be number one of "FIFA World Rankings per capita" but dont know currently. Wales (3m) with a very talented team also deserves a mention.

Its an absolute joke we have to play these mugs home and way.

F*ck playoffs. We need to get back down to WC groups of 4, with the top 2 qualifiying. What kind of DILBERT would actually buy a ticket to watch a game like this ?

Of course as far as FIFA are concerned its all about selling TV rights for junk games. Players get to artificially boost their stats against a bunch of amateurs, ITV get a couple of hours to fill their schedule and pump some ads, and we get to sit there and watch a load of half-paced pro's slap some goons around for a bit.

Tiresome in the extreme. Its not even sport.

All we need to do is to reunite Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.

And your point is?

Or is it just another angle to knock England and Kane in particular?

You can only play what's in front of you.

Not knocking anybody. However do think it is a farce some of teams playing at this stage and that they should have pre qualification games.

I havent got any facts but doubt if Greaves and Shearer had many opportunities like Kane to score 7 goals in a week against that standard of opposition

Included in Linekers goals for England are 2 hat tricks against Turkey when they were not very good and 4 against Malaysia… do they not count?

When Rooney beat the England goal scoring record many belittled the achievement saying he mainly scored against poor opposition.

Seems the same is happening with Kane who will break Rooneys record.

You can only score against what is in front of you and the rewriting of history to say that Lineker/Charlton/Greaves scored their goals against much better opposition is tiresome.

great record breaking win.

Should shut the knockers up for a bit , they had found their voices within 5 months of only losing a final on pens - amazing

Back in their holes , should re appear during the WC warm up games no doubt

Nice one Gareth ... again

Quite - I would add that most of Lineker's goals were in friendlies, what was it in competitive games, 20ish? vs Kane's 44!

Possibly.

Currently 13th in League 2.

So still the comparison doesn't work. Although we're getting warmer

Indeed. Not all Charlton's goals were against quality opposition. His include hat-tricks in friendlies in the late 50s and early 60s against USA, Mexico and Switzerland when none were that good. (Or weren't bothered. The respective scores were 8-1, 8-0 and 8-1). He also got a hat-trick against Luxembourg in a W.C. qualifier.

There was even an 'international standard' player on that pitch last night who today will be back at his main job working in a FIAT dealership, FFS.

Anyway, enough about Tyrone Mings; Gareth seems to value him.

These games are totally pointless. Football could learn much from cricket where the "minnows" play a qualifying tournament and the top teams from the qualifying tournament then go into the main draw with the big boys.

Both mens and womens England football teams learn nothing from hammering these part-time / semi pro sides. It also puts our top players at risk - playing unnecessary fixtures against cloggers (as we have seen in the mens two recent games).

The football structure is as it is as mugs still buy tickets for these lop-sided fixtures. A one-sided hammering is not a sporting spectacle and benefits neither side.

You don't have to buy tickets for these games, it is optional!

Also, don't forget, our failure to score enough goals against San Marino in 1993 stopped us going to the world cup!

The sense of entitlement that some are displaying is what led to project big picture and the European Super League. Beggars belief.

When Kane gets the record (potentially before the World Cup)

He will be the top England scorer
Most competitive goals by some distance
Most goals in tournaments
Currently 1 behind the hattrick record
2018 Golden Boot winner

That’s not too bad

Ok, not letting Hassocks play Man City in the FA first qualifying round of the FA cup is the same sort of entitlement that’s lead to project big picture.
