Can't work out for the life of me why they'd riot in there. If they don't like the place they could all pretty much walk out anyway.

Did they only get two glasses of champagne at midnight or something?

Things must be getting bad in the world if they start rioting in an open prison,

Perhaps they were trying to get them to go home?

Either that or Take That were going to play there.

Nothing heard in Arundel ... There's a little church hall by the prison when you are there for a kids party you can see people popping little parcels of paper through the fence.

They rioted because the did not want to be breathalized (they're not allowed to drink). WTF is wrong with our prisons these days, if they're banged up, breathalize them if they like it or not, they lost many of their rights when they commited crimes, sod 'em - put them into high security places and see whether they like it.

Only 2 guards on duty in the prison last night I hear.

That doesn't surprise me at all, as it is only a category D prison, in theory there is nobody in there who presents a danger to society...most of the inmates are near the end of their term and are being prepared for release. Last year I met a prison officer from our local prison, which has space for 330 prisoners, their standard night shift is six...and that is for a category B prison.

Ok, maybe that's fair enough, just didn't sound a lot.

Mr Freeman added: "We believe alcohol has played a large part in this.

"Over the past few nights prisoners have been reluctant to be breathalysed by staff. The staff have been chasing them round the blocks trying to breathalyse them, which is sort of reminiscent of the end scene from Benny Hill to me.

"And the fact is that this is what kicked it off last night was breathalysing the inmates. They didn't want to be breathalysed and the riot kicked off in the early hours of this morning.

"It has been a concern for a long, long time - the amount of alcohol that prisoners are able to get here at Ford. I understand that over 40 bottles of alcohol have been found empty - a great problem

If they struggle to keep hard drugs out of maximum security (something which always staggers me), then alcohol in an open prison must be easy to get and hide.

With all the cut backs and increased taxes we are faced with learning that convicts are enjoying themselves with beer and drugs makes a mockery of present day justice,we might as well let Warners run our prisons.

Why not let Harvey's run them...at least it would save the prisoners the bother of pursuading friends and family to help smuggle alcohol in!
