OP is spot on. I’ve been JV’s number one cheerleader on here since he signed and have said many, many times he’s practically my first name on the team sheet. Absolutely crucial player to how we play.

Veltman's PPG in the PL according to Transfermarkt.
21/22 he played almost the whole season minus the 3 "easy wins" against Burnley, Watford and Brentford.

Veltman is a really good player when he is not playing. When he does play he has good and bad games. He is combative but not classy. I doubt very much if he would be starting for any team above us in the PL. He's not in the Dutch international squad is he?
He was until a bust up with Koeman. He was in previous squads & tbf they have *serious* competition

I was mainly picking up on your “one and a half right backs” point. We have four.
Actually we have 5 that can play RB (Veltman, Webster, Lamptey, Hinshelwood and Kadioğlu) but you’re missing the point again.

To repeat, imo Veltman is by far our best RB followed closely by Jack and we are much poorer in defence when neither of our 2 decent FBs are available - the others are OK options for me (I’ve not seen Ferdi enough as a right sided player to judge though tbf)

I don’t think though, we’d be having this conversation if FH hadn’t resorted into playing 3 at the back with VH as RB because 4 of our RBs were injured, or us relying on a RB who is clearly better in attacking mode than running back to defend.

So (purely out of curiosity) why did you say we had one and a half?

I know the OP and you see it differently, but the second goal was a direct result of our reaction to their first goal. We lost our heads.

Veltman is a great RB and a passable RWB, great at shithousery and keeping calm and composed himself, but I’m not convinced he’s the type of leader on the pitch seeking to calm or reassure others. That has to come from captain and coaching staff, Veltman takes care of his own business.

Is the team better with Veltman in it? Playing a back four yes, playing a back three I’d rather see Hinshelwood or Kadioglu there for the role’s overall mobility.

Veltman wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference yesterday. All we had to do was keep playing the football that had allowed us to control the game for the first 85 minutes. I’m not buying this “our whole team falls apart without Veltman” narrative. At all. Our team fell apart yesterday through FH signalling his panic to the rest of the team, changing formation, abandoning the methods that had allowed us to control the game.

Veltman’s a quality right-back, I’m glad we’ve got him, but to lay recent results solely at the door of his absence is just wrong.

If the OP had said that the right side has been a problem for us without Jack, Ferdi and Joel, I’d agree with him to an extent, but I still maintain that our frailty is psychological and squad-wide, rather than player/position specific.

We don’t believe we can close out games. Fear of making mistakes is paradoxically leading us to make mistakes. We have to be less afraid, and that has to come from the coaching side. I’m hoping this new chap starting in January will be looking/working on this. Time will tell.

I do agree with you on the management calls, etc. All fair.

Igor’s unforgivable mistake isn’t the poor touch though - it’s the conscious decision to try to dribble past two opponents on the edge of our own box, in the 93rd minute.

I hear what you’re saying, but this is how the team are trained to play. If Igor couldn’t see an out ball, he’s supposed to hold onto it until he can.

I agree it sometimes feels suicidal, but I feel blame has to be shared between Igor and the players who were supposed to be giving him an out. We’d lost our heads.

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
Yes we need Veltman but Dunky had a good game today and VH made some important blocks. Not great communication between Bart and the FBs though.

Lamptey again, brilliant going forward but …. meh

It worries me that in a squad this size, we only have one decent RB. Or one and a half, if you count Jack.
Veltman
Ferdi
Hinsh
Lamptey

I would say we have 4 very good full backs.

I didn’t for the final time. Please stop posting edited sentences - it completely changes the meaning.

I said IMO we only have one and a half really decent RB s and that our defensive line is much weaker when Veltman isn’t playing - on the latter point I DO agree with the OP.

- I have consistently said (and listed!!) 5 in the squad who play in that position.

I didn’t read the rest of your post because it was too long and I don’t have time but it wasn’t related to the erroneous point you keep trying to make - that I think we only have 1.5 RBs on the team!🙄

See GB and my comments above.

If you rate Lamptey on the same level as Veltman or even Hinsh as RFBs on his defensive work then you must have been watching a different team for the last 2 seasons - As for Ferdi - How often have we played him in RB?

Sorry, Tariq is not a very good full *back*. His defensive positioning, discipline, awareness & anticipation are woeful. He's excellent going forward, of course. No one will dispute that
Thought he was much improved yesterday in those areas, he was the real big plus on a day when the stars like Pedro had off days
