It is FANTASTIC celebrating a goal properly. I actually don't think VAR would have changed anything tonight - definitely not handball from Lamptey as per the laws, certainly not from Mitoma, the foul on Pedro wouldn't have been given or Dunk on Palmer but we'd have to wait for hours for everything to be looked at. Still, on balance I do hate a grievous injustice so I like it being there for the clangers.

You don't 'think' VAR would have changed anything. And it probably shouldn't have. But if it had been active probably would have! And even if it hadn't, as you say, would have wasted time and killed momentum in the game. Summary, VAR = rubbish

either way they’d have been sat there for twenty minutes trying to work it out which is one of my major gripes with VAR

Wasn’t it much better? Even though I’m pretty sure we should’ve been given a penalty for Gusto clearly hauling Pedro over in the box, I thought the game was vastly more enjoyable with VAR. Able to celebrate goals, not worrying they will go back and chalk it off for a toenail offside, not having five minute long gaps in the game because VAR has seen someone sneeze out of turn.

There were a few moments in the game where one side had a chance and I found myself watching the replay to see if the player would have been onside, and had to remind myself to stop doing so as a) it would be irrelevant as there’s no VAR and b) that isn’t, and should never be, what football is about.

Obviously we saw yesterday in the Leicester game why VAR may well be needed, and it’s obviously not going anywhere anytime soon, but I thought the game was much, much more enjoyable and flowed a lot better without VAR. Like how football used to be. But that’s just my opinion, and I wasn’t in the stadium tonight, so I’m not sure if anyone there had different thoughts on this?

100% agree and said so numerous times during the game. Just so much better.

Massively agree with you, but I’ve been banging that drum since before the dreadful thing was brought in in the first place. We’ve had six seasons of it now and still can’t believe some fans still want it.

Just take us back to when you could properly celebrate a goal like tonight.

The players seem to play the game differently in the absence of VAR too. There’s a far better flow to the game and seemingly an acceptance that they are engaged in a fast-paced, dynamic contact sport at elite level, with all the minor imperfections that brings, and not a sterile and binary computer game.

They seem far more inclined to just get on with it - and less prone to fabricating or exaggerating trivial contact that will appear like a heinous foul when viewed in super slo-mo multiple times.

What’s more, I reckon they enjoy it more too.

No, at Spurs the linesman gave handball and VAR didn't feel it was a clear error, today hand ball wasn't given and is wasn't handball either

And not forgetting Marguire’s goal at the death in the game on Friday. It’s offside.

VAR is better for the game and generally more fair. But this is just my opinion. All well and good celebrating the lack of VAR when it benefits us but the bigger picture is that officiating has got so bad, and now so reliant on VAR, that we can’t have elite football without it. It’s a Wild West.

BBC fail to mention of course the times VAR has overruled a ref’s on field decision that was initially in our favour in circumstances where it shouldn’t have intervened.

As FH said, it’s not about the decisions (which probably are 6 of one and half a dozen of the other) but the fact VAR destroys the joy and spontaneity of celebrating goals and interrupts the flow of the game. VAR also is undermining the on pitch match officiating imo - it is seemingly destroying the few brain cells some match officials have in thinking for themselves and trusting in their own decision-making. (Can kids still do mental arithmetic when they leave school or has the reliance on calculators left that skill set undeveloped?)

The article mentions technology in the Newcastle game. There was no VAR but goal line technology was available.

MOTD covered both Lamptey (ball to hand - accidental) and Mitoma (shoulder) and concluded neither were handball.
