Well he died on his arse when he stepped up to manage a (newly relegated) Stoke didn't he. I think he'll have his work cut out in a PL dressing room where there will be an element of "Nathan who ?", not unlike at Chelsea now, but lower down the scale. He doesn't have much of a CV to fall back on, so if his methods don't bear dividends early on, you get the feeling some players could easily tune out.

Despite his antics at Yeovil I wouldn't wish him ill in this job, if he gets it. Other than the fact it would be quite nice to see Southampton back in the second division.

For the record, he did well at Luton.
He did badly at Stoke because Stoke were a basket case.
He has exceeded expectations back at Luton
He is a ruthless little bastard, not unfamiliar with the dark arts

Sometimes it just doesn't work out at a club and it doesn't have to be a case of "failing to step up"... sometimes its just the wrong guy at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Huge gamble for NJ. Southampton have a horribly unbalanced squad with too many young players and no strikers worthy of the name. I’m sure he’ll take it if offered but he might be better advised to pass.

Sometimes just chance how things work out, wrong manager, wrong faces in dressing room, not enough money, too much money, wrong opponent at the wrong time, wrong referee, etc etc etc. A very big element of luck can affect all sorts of stuff.

Yep, agreed here too. The problem for NJ is that you only get one of those excuses on your CV unless you are very, very experienced. He would need this to work out with Southampton otherwise he’s finished as anything other than a lower league journeyman manager.

Eddie Howe managed it, no reason why NJ can’t. Good luck to him.

Reminds me of an incident back in the day (90s maybe?) when Southampton appointed a new manager from a lower division - can't remember the bloke's name, sorry. Anyway, at the time Southampton had a youngish player who'd got a couple of England caps - can't remember who that was either ...........................

But at training, on the new manager's first day, his greeting for the new manager was 'Hello, I'm ******* - I'm an England international, don't you know. Would you like my autograph?'
