Mushrooming

Used to go 'shrooming' years ago out near Albourne. Would walk for ages then spot a few. Once you spot a few, closer inspection usually reveals hundreds in the same area. Found the taste a bit raw, so we used to brew them up in a huge teapot. Mush brews. Don't partake at all nowadays, far to busy trying to keep a handle on this plane of existence. Best time is defo Sept/Oct, think you will be lucky to spot any caps this time of year.


Other varieties? Not sure its worth the risk, unless you really know what you are doing.

That one looks pretty poisonous to me!

You only need a little bit of one, same effects as magic mushrooms.

Some very early season luck the other week. Chicken of the Woods. Nice texture to it, making it very moreish, but not the best tasting wild mushroom I've ever tried.

I have a friend who is into foraging and he has taken me out locally looking for funghi a couple of times.

Both times have been Nov/ Dec and we found winter Chanterelle, hedgehog, bluetts and Amethyst deceivers.

I borrowed [MENTION=2223]e77[/MENTION] s dehumidifier and stored them in jars.

Later i made some mushroom pate which was apparently very nice. [MENTION=6886]Bozza[/MENTION] and [MENTION=2223]e77[/MENTION] both had some.

I would never go out on my own, despite owning a number of books on the subject, it's far too dangerous.

Did you try the Amethyst Deceivers on their own? If so, what did they taste like?

I've never been bold enough to try them. I have eaten both Field and Wood Blewits though, and they give me a vague sense of those purple violet sweets we used to get as a kid

Hedgehog fungus is very satisfying to find. One, because it's impossible to mistake, and two because it's quite therapeutic gently rubbing those spines off.

So many Parasols I didn't know what to do with them! This is one of the pots ready to make into soup. Alas, there wasn't many Shaggy Parasols about though. (You can tell these aren't Shaggy even in this pic as they didn't bruise browny/red on cutting).

A couple of nice Giant Puffballs today. One about the size of size 1 kids football, the other about a full size 5 jobbie





Also some more Cauliflower Fungus too. This one is a bit cleaner than the other year so should be easier to prepare for cooking.


Coupled with a nice Chicken of the Woods haul yesterday, it's been quite a productive couple of days.

Been easing in to Shrooming myself recently, 3 weeks back found plenty of Giant Puffballs while visiting Mrs V's Ma in Shropshire. Not taken anything else for the pot though as been unsure on ID's.. Getting the John Wright River Cottage Fungi book soon to add to the phone app shroom identifier. Had a traipse round Kingley Vale wih Mrs V today and found loads of varieties, a couple were really beautiful. Great fun.

Nice stir fry with a Giant Puffball and Cauliflower Fungus in the mix. Lovely texture and taste to both.

Unfortunately the bigger of the two Giant Puffballs had just gone over as was turning yellow inside.

I’ve been getting into this recently. Recent trips to Sheffield Park and Southwater Country Park have been very successful. Haha I did something similar in Thailand many years ago - still now have a very vivid image of tripping that I was sat on a giant lit cigarette flying around the world
