I know Lloyd got us to the play off final, but he signed a few donkeys as well as a few heroes. I know Gus has signed a couple of questionable players, but I would say Gus is a far better manager/coach purely for the way he has got the the team to play and find the new players to compliment that style.

Questionable players? Whilst Poyet has signed some absolute gems he's had his fair share of duds, Holroyd and Harley for starters.

He has clearly identified the weaknesses from last season and so far seems to have got the right players to rectify this. If he gets us to the Premier League within the next couple of seasons, then yes he will be our greatest ever manager. At the moment that honour is still with Alan Mullery (first time round) IMHO.

Like that elusive centre forward?

Love Gus, but in my opinion, scrapes into the top 10 & nowhere near the top 5 ....yet, given the money etc he has been given

Two players which is what grummitts gloves said, a couple of players. I think Harley has improved in the preseason games that I've seen and it's too early to write him off as a dud.

I always remember an article on former winger Paul Wood who spoke about all his previous managers.

When asked about Lloyd he replied .....

'' All I can say about Barry Lloyd is that he looks a bit like my Father in Law''

I wouldn't even put Poyet in the top 5.

Apart from the obvious Mullery, and Peter Taylor who built the side Mullery got promoted, I'd place Coppell, Cattlin, and Barry Lloyd above Poyet, when you consider whay they done with what they had.

If our end of season league form continues over into this season, then Poyet will be sacked by the end of September.

He's built a great squad, but until he plays to its strengths, then he's miles away from earning legendary status.

This squad is good enough to finish in the top 5. I have doubts the manager is good enough to get them there.

Great to see someone so positive talk out doom and gloom!

Realisitic.

Gus will win you over this season Mr B. I know I moaned like buggery on here a few times last season and agreed with you a couple of times, but I think the business done so far shows a very shrewd man who knows what's required. Of course he will still not be able to please all of us all of the time, but I've got a feeling this is going to be a very good season

To anyone who has watched the Albion within the last 10/20 years then Gus will be our best manager & rightly so.

For us who have longer memories, I say no.

Get us into the top flight keep us there & then yes, he will be the best.

Mr Mullery, Catlin, Bailey & Meolia are in my opinion ahead.

Meolia is some crazy hybrid of Jimmy Melia and Tony Meola!

You're a hard man Mr Burns. Poyet is learning all the time and hadn't managed in the Championship before last August. I think we will do well this season, injuries permitting. I would put him in the top 3 so far as he learns very quickly when he makes mistakes and puts them right.
He's never top three at the moment. The big worry I have with Poyet, is he does not put thing right quick enough. A run of 12 without a win, and then a seperate run of one win in ten last season is my concern. He should have forgot his pretty football, and just tried to win games at any cost. His formation is a dream to some sides. How many times did teams come to the Amex and stick 11 players and the bus behind the ball, and we have no way through. This is why we were one of the lowest scoring side in the division last year, this is why CMS struggled to find goals.

Teams sussed us out, and Poyet couldn't or more to the point wouldn't change the style. We have three of the best wingers in the division, along with Vicente, CMS, yet we struggled to score goals. Why? f*** about with the ball in defense for 5 or 6 passes, you give the opposistion time to group behind the ball, and they did, and we couldn't break them down. Look at yesterday, can't remember how the third started, but the first two goals, were then we hit them on the break. THat's not Gus' style, he'd rather have seen the ball killed dead, and brought out from the back. Hitting teams on the break is not Gus' style at all.

Someone that played for Gillingham summed it up after the league cup game, when he said we thought they would murder and us, and they could have, but they were just too slow getting forward and we just parked the bus and they couldn't break us down. We let them play with it all day long across their back line.

And we couldn't break them down, an average 2nd division side, and it took if I remember correctly an Ashley Barnes penatly to win the game in extra time.

Looking at some of the other names people have put here and the reasons why, I doubt Poyets in the top ten at the moment.

But hey, we beat Chelsea in a friendly yesterday, so he has to be the greatest right?

I hope he does. He has the players to do it. But I don't think the signings he has made will make us any stronger going forward or improve the goal tally, unless he changes the way we play, and he's to stubborn to do that, even if it means another low scoring season with most teams "parking the bus" against us. I think too many people are getting carried away with yesterdays result to be honest

Yer, but when we go to Hull and sit through a 0-0 stalemate, which we will if he carries over the tactics of last season, and then sit through 90 minutes and watch a couple shots in the Cardiff game, as we did many times last year, then tell me he's our best ever manager. I'm only going on what I've seen so far, and sitting though some of the shit that was shovelled up home and away at the end of last season, I just don't know how 50% so far can say he's the best manager we've ever had.

Gus deserves to be Top 3 based purely on style of play already. The technically most impressive and intelligent football Albion have ever played.

Can't believe Melia has been mentioned in the same breath as Mullery, Cattlin or even Lloyd. Sure got us to Wembley, but took us down and training wise the club was a laughing stock with senior pro's organising and having a say in team selection.

Mullery took us to the top division, Mike Bailey took us to our highest ever position, Lloyd took us to one game away, Cattlin to 5th or 6th I seem to recall. Gus potentially is the greatest manager, but needs to at least eclipse these achievements to be considered the best.

Style of foootball wise however, he must be up there with Mullery.

He's been the best manager since I have been watching the Albion, as for the best ever I do not know.

The odd thing is, Mullery is a legend among fans, but seems to be barely recognised by the club.

We have pictures of Leon Knight, Paul Rogers and Guy Butters on the wall outside the Amex, all reasonable players but hardly legends, yet not a trace of the only manager ever to take Brighton & Hove Albion into the top division? Bizarre.

Got 6 posts in and someone suggests Barry Lloyd is above him .

One of the most ridiculous things I've read on here this summer and there have been plenty to choose from .

As a result , I'm out

When he finishes the job, whatever that means, is the time to vote. Seen too many managers in my time being held up as heroes one minute and then crash and burn. I'd say he's done a good job so far but needs to achieve more to get legendary status in my book.
