After visiting yesterday I need to get my head around a few things. It's much more "estatey" than I imagined and there are some definite no go areas for me. It feels like a town with about a dozen or so really nice roads and adjoining roads that has been infilled an awful lot. That's OK but it's like it has 2 identities, maybe more. I guess a first visit anywhere on this sort of mission is much the same

Thought the town centre was fine, not much to it but it's neat and tidy and not boarded up as much as some.

The place we saw was underwhelming and we drove past a couple of others that were in rabbit warrens that didn't appeal. On the other hand we saw a couple for sale in really nice roads that would be in our price range so we're fairly positive.

Still going to explore further along the coast and then try to narrow down

It's bigger than most people realize but the only area I'd really avoid is Raymond Close. There was a lot of housing built during the 40's and 50's and these seem to have a much better build quality then the later ones. The biggest estate is Chyngton which was a council estate but now is nearly all private.

From the descriptions on here, it's definitely been over hyped, and I can understand your underwhelming. You would think from the descriptions that it was akin to St Tropez.

Oh give it a rest. People who know the area give their honest opinions and you who know next to nothing run it down. Who to believe?

Well he's been and seen for himself now, and didnt think it was all that. So it's a case of seeing is believing and personal opinion.

Not really. People said it was a great place to live. It is quite nondescript in all honesty but it's situation, the downs, the sea, the cliff and seven sisters, it's proximity to Brighton and Eastbourne and the ease of reaching London by train are all big plusses. I'm not really sure where you get St. Tropez from?

I have to speak my mind here. Seaford is a curtain twitching, Daily Mail absorbing, seething-with-discontent hell hole. Anyone with any spark about them gets the google out as soon as they can.
It does have a direct train to Falmer though.

Rye is beautiful but a long way from the Amex. Is proximity to football your No.1 consideration, really?

Love how this guy calls it a hell hole, and gets no abuse. I don't go that far, but merely don't think it's all that and get completely lambasted. Awesome stuff.

I'm really struggling to understand why you think posters have been over-hyping the town. My take on this thread is that it's a collection of matter-of-fact posts plus some utterances from a snob in Hove.

The guy went and visited and was underwhelmed. Maybe his expectations were built up?

I'm not a snob at all and I live in a shitty part of Hove, actually.

If you care to visit in the near future I'll show you some parts that you won't have seen before. You might be impressed.

I wasn't underwhelmed with the town just the house that we saw. I admit the town wasn't what I was expecting but I didn't come away with a feeling any more or less positive or negative than before we visited, just a little different. There were some very nice parts indeed and some fairly ordinary, pretty much like anywhere else in the world. It's very much still an option for us, we'll look in other towns along the coast too but that was always the intention.

I lived in the snobby bit of Hove too, and even that has it's Pro's and Cons

When I read this I thought of 'Shameless'! If you mean downmarket, I can't think of any town less so. You need to explore a lot more, MOST of it is nice, maybe use Google Earth Street View. BTW I passed a Rolls parked on Blatchington Hill yesterday, I guess its owner says Sea-FORD.

Whilst I am 'the enemy' I do now live down 'ere. I live just East of Eastbourne and work in Brighton so my journey to work takes me through Seaford and a few other villages/towns if I chose to avoid the A27. I love this bit of coast and there will always be bits to avoid in any town really. I don't think I would consider Seaford as has been mentioned by others - it is neither here nor there, not big enough to have everything you would need yet not small enough to be a retreat from the rat race. Are you particularly married to Seaford and Rye or are there other areas that interest you? Lewes perhaps? I doubt Eastbourne would be for you although parts of Old Town and of course Meads is lovely. Alfriston perhaps or East Dean? These are very quiet but picturesque and pricey.

Downmarket? Not at all and there were some very nice parts indeed and the overall "feel" of the place was positive and we'll definitely be back. The comment on Estates was simply an observation ... I didn't mean it in any context positive or negative. There are things we are looking for and No Go areas refers to all sorts of things including Firle Road and Blatchington Hill unfortunately

Our decision to move is purely financial .. so Lewes is out based on how much we'll have available for a house and what sort of house we are wanting. Rye just seemed to throw up nice looking properties from our Rightmove searching. We're also going back and will look around Eastbourne and Hastings and adjoining. Not too concerned by access given we won't be working so it gives us a huge area to consider which actually makes this a more difficult exercise than I first thought

We're in the process of looking to move (back into Eastbourne's Old Town) and there does seem a lot about at the moment. Good luck with your search.

Just noticed that there was a bit of a binfest in here. Seems to have fizzled out though. Shame. Always late to the party

Fact of the matter is that it depends where you've come from, really:
If you've lived in Blackpool, Crawley or Croydon, Seaford is like Heaven on Earth.
If you're from Haywards Heath, it's probably about right.
If you're from Brighton, London, Manchester etc etc (or under 30) it's going to bore you to tears.

Still, it's about a billion times nicer than Newhaven...
