Rye GC - is it still stuck in the 19th century and not letting outsiders play?

I would rule Rye out for its duff transport links.

Oh, and Seaford's got a half-decent fish and chip restaurant!

Most people pronounce it as Seaford, the way it looks. But some pretentious knob I know insists on Sea....Ford. With an emphasis on Ford.

You seem very bitter about Seaford and Seafordians. As for pronunciation either C Ford or C fud are used. As DD said C Ford is the original way the town was known as. I use both. You could have the same debate about how folk pronounce Brighton. Is it Brightun or Brighton?

Do keep up love, we've done all that already. It's nothing to do with pretentiousness, would you have a dig at people from Frome or Leigh?

So you have narrowed it down to one person that says Sea...ford.
I have have worked in some big houses in the town owned by very educated people that pronounce it Sea...ford,
does not bother me one bit, i am always treated with respect.

Heard a lot from people who live or have lived in Seaford but no one from Rye? Well I lived six years in Rye and they were some of the best days of my life. A town with the mentality of a country village. Every day you feel you are deep in the country and living history. It has a great golf course and although I dont know about living in the twon itself there are so many satellite villages (Icklesham, Peasmarsh, Winchelsea, Iden) that are just gorgeous. The rail system and bus connect direct to Hastings and Ashford and although the roads are windy and slow to Hastings its not awful. If I didnt need a job, this is where Id live.

Queens Head at Icklesham - worth moving there for that alone!

Funnily enough it's called Sea Ford as that's what was there when the town was originally a port and the river Ouse ran alongside the sea and entered the sea at the harbour. There was a FORD over the river to the sea. It's not hard to understand why the original pronunciation was Sea Ford.

Oh and the original inhabitants were mostly a rough crew of smugglers and wreckers and fishermen. Nothing lofty or pretentious enough for you to get a bee in your bonnet about.

Quite right and they were known as the "Shags". Sussex town dwellers were often named after birds, like people from Lewes are known as rooks. Seaford was what was known as a rotten borough in years gone by as it had 2 MP's and about a dozen voters and the MP's were known to buy the votes they needed for re-election. Among it's MP's were a couple of prime ministers.

I always said there was one person who called it that, and plenty of 'I'm better than you' others in my personal experience.

I live in Hove and will happily take the piss out of my own town and its pretentious self righteous residents. I don't get why people are ver so defensive about the town they live in and won't hear any criticisms.

I expect she has lost interest now Doug, she wont be interested in the history of the town only slagging down the good people of the town.

We are not all small minded and bitter like you, you were slagging down half the towns in Sussex in a thread two weeks ago.

I'm not small minded and bitter at all. The people I'm referencing are pretentious, not the good people. As I kept saying, it's a huge generalisation. The OP wanted to know people's opinions and I gave mine. Simple as. You may think I'm wrong. So be it.

Love how no one is jumping to the defence of the slagging of Rye.

Comparisons are odious. You've managed to write off a whole town because you know some pretentious people.

If you back track any more from your original post you will be moving to Seaford.

I can not comment on Rye as i have never lived or worked in the town.
I have stayed in the town centre a couple of times and liked the place

The trouble is you started off like this:

'Seaford is for the people who think they are a bit better than Eastbourne, and in reality aren't good enough for Lewes.'

You stated a belief about the people of the town and then you've tried to back down by saying you were generalizing.

You've also quietened down about the pronunciation, I suspect because your bigoted view was found to be misinformed.

I would imagine that the reason many here are defending Seaford, is that in the experience of those of us who've actually lived there, it's pretty good.

Defending Rye. Who needs to defend it? Apart from being widely acknowledged as 'out in the sticks' (an advantage in some people's reckoning) it's had almost universal praise on here. It's certainly one of the loveliest towns in Sussex.

Ok so my original statement was based on the many people I know who both come from and live in Seaford, from my experience of working there and working with people who live there.
I then in my next posts said it was generalisation. Obviously it is because I don't know every single person that lives there.

I'm not back tracking, I've merely given my personal opinion. Some of you think I'm wrong. I can definitely deal with that.
