Holgate knew what he was doing, that was an intentional attempt at putting Mitoma out the game which could have been career ending. This fella should get a lengthy ban for that

Literally the entire movement and body language was “take out Mitoma”. The ball was actually there to be won, but Holgate visibly had no interest in making such a challenge.

And for an alternative view on one of their forums:

"If you buy into the bullshit that the Holgate challenge was a red card, then you're part of the problem. No one got injured, no one had to leave the game, just a robust challenge that was a yellow at the absolute worst.

This isn't football, it's non contact, pre ordained rubbish where for some reason, we're seen as the rubbing rag team, worthy of every bad decision, every talking point and for me, I can't wait to get out of this f***ing pantomime league. Hopefully some of you whiny fuckers will latch on to Man City, Liverpool, whoever and stick with the Prem because slagging us off after more decisions like today really isn't what fans do."

Must be something in the water up there....
In fairness, nearly all the other forum members call him out for the catastrophic brain-dead SPANNER that he is. But blimey.
Think we've found Chris Wilder's account on the SUFC forum.

I think Wilder knows full well that its a shocking "tackle", and his comments are to try and reduce the chances of his player getting an extended ban for it. I think it warrants being more than a 3 match ban.

To be fair, every other post on that thread supports the red card and is mocking the OP.

That photo a few posts in? Ooof!! That could have ended Mitoma.

"a yellow at the absolute worst."
So he thinks it shouldn't really have been a booking. Yeah ok Chris

The ref was not at the correct angle to see the incident and so I understand his error.

The linesmen on the other hand had a perfect view and it's inexcusable as an officiating team they were unable to give this as a red card on the pitch.

VAR is basically there ruining our game because the officials are so poor they can't do the job on their own
Not sure either linesman had a good view of it either to be fair, it was in the other half to the linesman on that side, and the far side of the pitch from the linesman in that half. The original broadcast view of it live it wasn't obvious that Mitomas right leg had been caught as all, looked like his left foot was taken with Holgates left. The reaction of our players told me it was worse, and then the replay from the other angle showed just how bad.

I don’t know where he was looking but it’s irrelevant with regards to the sending off.

I didn't say otherwise - either way it's a straight red. But if he wasn't looking at the ball, and was trying to kick Mitoma, then a 3 match ban isn't long enough.
No way he’s looking the ball.

By that point he's already missed the ball. Personally, I can't tell from what I've seen, but if you're sure he was just aiming for Mitoma, I'm not going to argue

He obviously told his players to hit ours hard meaning that he has nowhere to hide in his dressing room; he has to back his player in public.

The heavy treatment handed out to Buonanotte prior to the Mitoma assault proves that the Sheff Utd players were told to go out and bully us.
And in my mind there is nothing wrong with that instruction, within reason. Go beyond that and you get sent off.

The BBC says Holgate is the only player to have received a red card in each of the past three Premier League seasons. Interesting that his Wikipedia page doesn't note that claim to fame. Any Wikipedia editors out there?
Sorted for you. I also see from Wiki that his two last debuts (Sheffield Utd and Southampton) both ended in 5-0 defeats.

"It's a mis-timed tackle. You know, whether it's too powerful as people talk about or however they want to dress it up. The game's moved on - I get it. But it certainly gave.... yellow card straight away, I think he pulled out, but with VAR it gives them the opportunity of upgrading it - and obviously they did that."

Mis-timed?

Dressed up as "too powerful"?

Blimey.

Lying bastard.
Looked like "crock Mitoma early on & the ref won't want to send you off that early".
Reckon they were told to go after Fati too.
Horrible team & manager

Hopefully MOTD2 won’t be all BBC-ish with the olde “I’m sure Holgate didn’t mean to hurt anyone, just mistimed”.

I don’t have Sky these days, I always liked the emphatic stuff from Neville etc in later analysis with video screens, where they candidly said what most punters felt. I loved that 7pm to 8pm Mondays slot.

Redknapp was scathing about the foul, calling it “assault”.

Wilder blanked Holgate when he walked passed him on his way to the tunnel, if he genuinely felt he was hard done to he would had a different reaction.
