Reeks of total desperation. Id be embarrassed if I was an Everton fan.
In fairness to them, I think Gordon had all but done what Trossard did. Not trying in games, needing dropped etc. I think this one is them making the best out of a bad situation.

The 'pay them handsomely' bit is doing a LOT of work in this particular deal though.

Going to have to be 'young Marlon Brando' levels of handsome to get this one over the line.
Sure.

But Smith wasn’t talking about Caicedo, nor about January deals, more about a general dynamic of the transfer industry.

I'm not saying he's right, but I always find him to be one of the better-informed and considered of the pundits doing the rounds, so I listen to what he has to say,

The Albion board have handled this situation impeccably. It is very rare now to get huge deal between Prem clubs in the January window, especially when the selling club does not wish to sell and financially doesn't need to sell.

I think that midfielders like Caicedo are golddust - nobody bats an eyelid at the £100million price tag attached to Declan Rice and yet - whilst he is a quality player - I'll happily stick with Caicedo thanks.

The increasingly athletic nature of the Prem means the Top 6 are desperate for his like. Liverpool have lost their zip and have dropped like a stone, similarly Chelsea's pedestrian football means they're midtable. I think between them Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea need 5 players of that ilk, so there is sure to be a bidding war in the summer.
So, so important to hold the line here on this one, as sets the scene for the future, players leave very much on our terms

It didn't take Arsenal fans long to bring out the big club bollocks - up until 6 months ago they were shite and had been shite for years. Hopefully they will revert to being suitably shite in the next few months too.
A week ago I wouldn’t have minded someone else winning the league for a change, but frankly I want them to burn now with AFTV blaming us for not letting Caicedo go.

Wonder what Moises is thinking right now? Poorly advised or not, he, at 21 must be wondering what the bloody hell do I do now!
He gets his head down, continues to work hard under his existing contract for his current employer under the terms he agreed, and looks forward to his big money move in the summer.

Naylor is still smashing out very good tweets. He has been handed a huge tit-bit for his support.

TB beginning to show his hand on this.

Very embarrassing for Arsenal to chase a player so hard when they are so successful, but still potentially fail!

Is that a joke? He's got 3.5 years left (if the club extends), and no one thought to mention it?

You're wrong, because you're ignoring the nuances of both deals:

1) Ultimately, everyone has their price and the buying club has to meet that price. Cucurella got lucky in the end as his was clearly met when Chelsea offered silly money. £60m FFS. Of course we accepted! You'll note Man City were sent away with a flea in their ear even when upping their £30m to £35m. He didn't "force" his move there did he?
2) Length of service is an issue. This club feels no obligation to allow its players to move to a top 6 club if they've only been here 5 minutes, and rightly so. Trossard may have sulked in the end, but to be fair he had done his time and played here for 2.5 years, and sometimes he was spectacularly good. As such, I doubt the club felt it was fair to hold out for top dollar, but equally nobody is saying his sale price was anything other than fair to all parties.
3) We had reasonable cover for both Cuckoo (Pervis) and Trossard (Kaoru). I'm not so sure we have a replacement ready for Caicedo.

Not the best time to come out with this statement when their current squad (whilst top of the league) includes:

Saliba (signed when 19 i think), Marquinhos, Martinelli, Smith-Rowe, Saka and Nketiah
If you look at what I replied to I stand by my comment.

Very much this. If we had a fit Moder and Mweppu was still with us it might have been a very different call. TBks strategy will only work if you have a replacement lined up. Thats where the Scummers fell down.

Yep. Very much this.

Man City offered what most would consider to be a fair price. However, we had no intention of selling at a 'fair price'. Why would we?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought their offer was insulting. Wasn't it £30m for our player of the season? We've spend nearly £20m on players with no experience of the PL, who have turned out to be not good enough for the PL. If there were proven players like Cuckoo available for £30m, I like to think we'd bid for them.

Speaking of which, why hasn't he moved anywhere yet? Or why isn't there the same 'noise' around him that there is for Caicedo? And Harry Kane, who threw his toys out of his pram when he didn't get the move to Manchester City?

I love the 1 year team options and the way they just seem to be thrown in at the end. From a players side if you’re going to sign until 2027+team option then it’s better to sign to 2028 without it.
Obviously, but that's not been offered with the same terms

That may be so, but isn’t it about time somebody told them where to go?

I honestly think the so called big teams are shitting their pants, worrying that a mid table team like ourselves, Fulham or Brentford are going to break their monopoly of the English game.
This. Real danger this season that some minor league team(s) will break into their cozy cartel
