The Albion board have handled this situation impeccably. It is very rare now to get huge deal between Prem clubs in the January window, especially when the selling club does not wish to sell and financially doesn't need to sell.

I think that midfielders like Caicedo are golddust - nobody bats an eyelid at the £100million price tag attached to Declan Rice and yet - whilst he is a quality player - I'll happily stick with Caicedo thanks.

The increasingly athletic nature of the Prem means the Top 6 are desperate for his like. Liverpool have lost their zip and have dropped like a stone, similarly Chelsea's pedestrian football means they're midtable. I think between them Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea need 5 players of that ilk, so there is sure to be a bidding war in the summer.

So, so important to hold the line here on this one, as sets the scene for the future, players leave very much on our terms

You're wrong, because you're ignoring the nuances of both deals:

1) Ultimately, everyone has their price and the buying club has to meet that price. Cucurella got lucky in the end as his was clearly met when Chelsea offered silly money. £60m FFS. Of course we accepted! You'll note Man City were sent away with a flea in their ear even when upping their £30m to £35m. He didn't "force" his move there did he?
2) Length of service is an issue. This club feels no obligation to allow its players to move to a top 6 club if they've only been here 5 minutes, and rightly so. Trossard may have sulked in the end, but to be fair he had done his time and played here for 2.5 years, and sometimes he was spectacularly good. As such, I doubt the club felt it was fair to hold out for top dollar, but equally nobody is saying his sale price was anything other than fair to all parties.

3) We had reasonable cover for both Cuckoo (Pervis) and Trossard (Kaoru). I'm not so sure we have a replacement ready for Caicedo.

Very much this. If we had a fit Moder and Mweppu was still with us it might have been a very different call. TBks strategy will only work if you have a replacement lined up. Thats where the Scummers fell down.

Man City offered what most would consider to be a fair price. However, we had no intention of selling at a 'fair price'. Why would we?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought their offer was insulting. Wasn't it £30m for our player of the season? We've spend nearly £20m on players with no experience of the PL, who have turned out to be not good enough for the PL. If there were proven players like Cuckoo available for £30m, I like to think we'd bid for them.
