Zaniola plays in a different position. I agree with @saafend_seagull. If we sell Caicedo in January for anything less than an astronomical sum then I think you'd see the first stirrings of unrest at our transfer policy.

It makes no sense to sell him now and would not only undermine our attempts to achieve something very special in the history of the club but would be a massive kick in the nads to RDZ and would act as an immediate buzzkill/demotivater for him.

A more positive and equally plausible reason for signing Zaniola(if we do) would be to say that it's the club fully backing RDZ. It could be a 'you did what you had to with Trossard but have lost a top quality and important player so here's an even better one to take his place. Caicedo is going nowhere until the summer. Now go get us into Europe.'

It could also serve as a sign to the players that we will, when necessary, splash out on the players who will immediately improve the squad. That is to say, we're not just a selling club.

It could be that. Or it could be a weak attempt to gloss over the cheap sale of one of our star, world class players. We'll know one way or another in the next ten days.

I agree, but for the sake of 4 months I'd like to make sure I was playing CL next season as well as tripling my salary and I don't think Chelsea can offer that at the moment.

I think clubs often sound out players via their agents as to whether they'd be interested in a move and salaries would be mentioned.

This was touched on a bit in the sky programme discussed on a different thread. Chelsea can’t talk to the player. Rules against that. Nothing to stop them speaking to agents. I expect the agents then speak to the media and say “agreement in principle” the media reports it. Player starts getting a bit unsettled. The middle aged men in suits tell the player to be awkward at work. Player does as instructed. Off we go.
