I think you ought to read this:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...der-myth-can-inform-uks-future-covid-response

"According to Prof Mark Woolhouse, an epidemiologist at Edinburgh University who sits on the government’s SPI-M committee, the chance of a super-spreader event among the crowds that turned up from Bournemouth to Southend was minimal in theory – and nonexistent in practice."
Indeed. The evidence is that mass outdoor events ( unless they have indoor bars etc. like eg. Cheltenham Festival ) are not superspreader events.

unfortunately , looks like this.

aside to that it would appear, as someone else said .....the country is ****ed.

there appears to be no reasoning with these heavy handed , power crazed morons in uniform , they have always had the wholesale support of the community but scenes like this do them no favours .....at all.

It’s the Barberisation of the police force

Police stood by and watched Rangers fans celebrating winning their Premiership, but women trying to peacefully hold a vigil for a murder victim are deemed threats.

I've said it on other threads but we've been slept walked into a police state by the government and the police ( the Met in particular ) love it. The right to challenge authority, the right to protest and the right to hold the authorities to account has all but been crushed.

Outrageous and tone deaf response by the Met. There have been plenty of protests during the pandemic without this kind of response, eg BLM. Again the perception of police is they pick on east targets.
Worth noting that this protest could have gone ahead if the police had interacted with the organisers. The judge ruled that needed to happen and as the police wouldn’t had to be outlawed.
The fact that the Duchess of Cambridge attended makes it really uncomfortable for the Met and government and they won’t be able to sweep this under the carpet. Good on her.

From what I could see the Police should have just retreated and not got involved and let it fizzle out naturally, a tactic used elsewhere. There are countless examples of the Police not enforcing the letter of the law in the interest of public relations and common sense.

As it stands the nurses protest in Manchester ended up with a 65 year old woman get fined £10,000 followed by this is going to feed the narrative they are bullies who pick on minorities and women. TBH at the moment that is what it is beginning to look like to me.

If nothing else the fact that politicians of all sides have criticised them and the Commissioner looks fairly likely to lose her job would suggest a crises in itself.

The whole thing is wrong

But you don’t pick and choose who gets fined, if the 65 year old broke the rules around organising a gathering she should get a fine.

A pointless vigil?

The Duchess of Cambridge also visited Clapham Common to pay her respects. When is she to be arrested for defying the law?

Well... she turned up in the daytime, dropped a flower and immediately left.

In the evening, many congregated (some with placcards, and with a PA system in place) at a time/place where a protest had been specifically banned.

So there's a clear difference there regarding the actions, and the reaction.

BUT the Met should have never have banned the vigil imo (blatently a Gov/Patel decision) - the organisers were trying to organise it safely.

AND, even after banning it, the Met should have stayed back last night.

Poor show all round.

While I'm sure there were a few rentamob, professional demonstrators present, The behaviour of the Met was ridiculously over the top.
If your ultimate boss is Priti Patel, then you pretty much have carte blanche to Bully at will. I suspect Johnson will be telling ministers that it's time to 'form a square around the Pritster' again.

what would have been different if the organisers had been allowed to go head? same with a larger crowd. some didnt want a vigil, they always wanted a protest as we saw.

So to those of you defending the police for their heavy handed tactics “because pandemic”, what’s the defence for them smashing up the memorial? Do flowers spread COVID?

I mentioned the Brighton protest/vigil last night, but there were similar ones in Bristol and Nottingham that I have read about, that haven't had problems.

A gently, gently approach would have been appropriate, imo.

Have to agree. Had it been a genuine vigil then those that were there could have observed the two metres etc but the question is, were there some there intent on using it to make a point and try and get a reaction from the Police which it seems the Police didn't handle well. The Police will no doubt be hung out to dry by the politicians who passed the covid laws in the first place.

Again for the police sympathisers Clapham Common has been packed on weekends during the pandemic hundreds of people out enjoying the open space with no police presence. Stop using covid as an excuse for aggressive Policing this event would of passed peacefully with a few police their for safety.
