I must be unique in not getting carried away with refs at games. I have tunnel vision for the ball and play.

Amex attendees think they’re experts on every decision from 125 yards away, spitting hate, I’m surprised more folk don’t harm themselves.

I once sat next to @HWT high up in WSU north. We were the only two calm punters, everyone around us furious with alleged injustices in the SE corner.

Personally I think Dean’s okay. Friend and Atkinson are arrogant AND error strewn - after looking at their errors post games on youtube. But it’s not personal against the Albion, they’re despised up and down the country.

I had said before the game that i preferred Dean to Friend, Moss eat al (that hasn’t changed) ….one doesn’t query every decision or spit hate ..but one does have a view even at x yards away ….particularly where it doesnt seem to be evens on decisions made…..and I’ll call out the ones where the opposition dont get it
He wasn’t the reason why we lost of course…..just doesn’t help..I look forward to Wednesday and see how Kane is reffed :moo:

Dean/VAR gave us a huge present today in failing to send off Sanchez on 19 minutes.

Mane, TAA, Thiago, Jota, Robertson would’ve torn ten men to shreds.

The debatable niggly fouls and zzzzzz disputes about throw-ins pale into insignificance to the Sanchez blunder. Football writers and ex-players across the spectrum just can’t fathom out the error.

It’s not the big decisions, it’s the little ones that do my head in. Rolling ball or not exactly in the right place for us = game stopped and retake let them regroup. For them on no it’s fine play on. Happened time and time again. He just wants to be centre of attention and loves it.

I’ve not seen the incident apart from real time …VAR might care to explain that one.

First time a goal has been scored when ive been in my seat and not even noticed the ball went in the net …my watch had to tell me Liverpool had scored :moo:

Yes I also had no idea they had scored. Couldn’t work out why Liverpool fans were celebrating VAR not fingering Sanchez.

Incidentally, whilst our atmosphere was undoubtedly flat, the away end was very very quiet too.

I’m not saying it’s definitely NOT a pen but, how exactly is Bissouma meant to move his arm completely out the way within .4 seconds? I legitimately don’t know how he doesn’t end up handballing it there.

The problem here is as outlined in a recent article in the Athletic. More often than not a penalty is worth more than the actual offence deserves. In this case the ball was clearly sailing way over the bar but Liverpool managed to get a free hit from 12 yards which was almost certainly going to end in a goal. Other examples of players coming together on the goal line when the forward is attempting a cross at a 90 degree angle and the defender clips his ankle. The threat in that instance is minimal but again the attacking team get a free hit from 12 yards with a high xG compared to the very low xG where the incident happened.

Yes of course the defenders could make better decisions and not dive in etc but the system is very unfair. They suggested a better solution was to introduce the thing they used years ago in the MLS where a forward was given a run on goal from 35 yards and had 5 seconds or so to score 1 on 1 against the keeper. In most instances this is a fairer outcome and also adds to the excitement for the fans.

Every fecking time they entrust him with the whistle.

We all know what we are getting every time we see he has been appointed

At 2:11 Bissouma’s arm was bizarrely high up, a stonewall pen, Biss didn’t even argue.

Sanchez should’ve been sent off for endangering an opponent Diaz. Crazy play, his eyes and actions only for the man, he forgot there’s a ball in play.

And Dean could easily have yellow carded Biss, meaning after his silly ball-bashing antics earlier, we'd be down to ten men and Biss suspended for Spuds.

I have an interesting hypotheis. You don't get to be an EPL ref, and stay one for years, if you are demonstrably biased and/or useless. Yes, they can make mistakes....but....

I recon the opprobrium is mainly because he looks like a punchable Jasper Carrott. With that, every decision we don't like is a ****ing orgy of confirmation bias

I enjoyed our performance today. We didn't get lucky or plucky like some teams, but we play football, not Turf Moor monkey tennis (other forms of harum scarum nonsense are available but, sadly, Bielsa Balti is now off the menu, replaced for a short time only by by Fat Frank ******s marinated in Jesse's jockstrap juice).

I think the problem nowadays, particularly with so called expert pundits, is that they comment on so and so wasn’t going to get the ball, so it should or shouldn’t be a penalty. Similarly at corners, when a defender bear hugs an attacker, but if the ball flies over the box,p it’s not a penalty as the attacker will never get the ball.

Call me old fashioned, but I’d prefer the objective approach; if it’s a foul in the box, it’s a penalty regardless. I know where you are coming from, but I feel if the decisions become more subjective it will just lead to more frustration.

I know what you mean as I prefer things to be less subjective eg. If you are in an offside position when the ball is played forward then its offside. However there must be a better way at resolving some of these unbalanced penalty decision outcomes

It was a penalty but Sanchez going would have been harsh. Dean gave them a handful of soft fouls and should have booked a few cynical Liverpool actions. We got very little today.

Re your hypothesis, erm apparently you do….

You may also wish to review the balance of where the referees are located, there is a clear bias to the North West, which feels like it seems to manifest itself in 50/50 decisions against us in a number of games.

Foreign referees look far better than PL in European games, and I think with the exception of Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver, frankly in the main they are abysmal. Even incompetent clowns like Lee Mason are found a job…. The whole system is not fit for purpose.

But I agre, I thought we were okay today. I mean we’re playing Liverpool FFS….. what was everyone expecting?

Dean did have a shocker though.
