the difference was that we lost currie, cullip, virgo and harding - four of our key performers from the previous season. and who were they replaced by? the likes of turienzo who was deemed not good enough by mcghee after a failed trial and then for some reason signed anyway, jason dodd and the big january signing to bolster an ailing squad and make a difference in the fight to stay up - doug loft. from hastings

as much as i LOVE mark mcghee, we weren't. we were five points adrift of safety having just lost our sixth game in a row. we were in the bottom three from the end of january until the very end

we did look like picking up a bit over christmas before oatway got injured, carpenter got rushed back to replace him and we had to rely on joe gatting to get the goals to keep us up. there was a distinct improvement towards the end when mcghee did finally get his striker in gifton noel-williams, so who knows what would have happened if we had have been able to make at least one signing in january
