To sell players other clubs need to want to buy them! moreover at sensible fees agreeable to both clubs, that's often far from easy, especially with only, in Ryan's case, little more than a week left on the transfer window. Better a loan move than no move at all.

Of course I understand that - but we are so unbelievably bad at it! If we want to progress, using our sustainability model, we will not only need to develop our own players (and sell on some of them for big fees a la Southampton, Leicester, etc.), but also sell players we no longer need in order to be able to occasionally pay a higher price for a player to fill a gap we ca't fill (striker anyone?).

But we're never going to get there as long as we're seen as a soft touch, a small club that'll accept peanuts for our players. Look at our record:
Duffy - can't sell, on loan;
Ryan, can't sell, on loan;
Locadia, can't sell, on loan;
Andone, couldn't sell, loaned out, bounced straight back to us.
Martin Montoya, couldn't sell, gave him away;
Ollie Norwood, loaned out, loaned out again (winning Championships) and sold for peanuts (and finishing above us in the league last season);
Bernardo, can't sell, loaned out;
David Button, practically given away for about a quarter of what we paid for him;
Dale Stephens, practically given away to a relegation rival;
Kayal, loaned out until his contract ended.

It's not a good record, is it? - we paid millions for some of those players. Strewth - gong back we even let Murray go for nothing!

Very poor assumption IMO. He comes across as a great person and consummate pro

But is he a 'good' Premier League goalkeeper anymore?

I'd say no, and also say that he hasn't been one for ages.

Are people gutted that he's gone because he's a good goalie, or more for the fact that he always came across to the fans as a 'decent bloke' and was part of some great wins along the way. AND made (not makes) some great saves ,,,,,,,

Good move for all party’s. We free up wages and foreign squad places. He’s got time to consider his future either in England or Australia or wherever and maybe more opportunities for a bit of first team football. Good luck Matty

Being dropped for Spurs away was clearly a warning to Ryan, obviously it was a warning he didn’t take seriously enough. Whether that was about performance levels, training levels, attitude etc is something we’ll probably never know.

Is the correct answer. Can't help noticing how people's views are a little clouded as he comes across as a nice chap! I'd rather he was like Roy Keane and a miserable git who was consistently performing.

Fair play to his agent as didn't predict it playing out like this. Not even on the bench for us and then he has the possibility that he might at some point get on for the Gunners. A pretty good move and personally did he deserve it?

Sorry to see him go considering what he helped us achieve. At least he hasn’t gone to a relegation rival where you know he would come into great form and help keep them up

Good luck to Matty

No, I don't know better. How could I? And that's the point. you don't know either. The Ryan situation is bizarre. There could very well have been a huge falling out that was in danger of becoming toxic so they thought the best course of action would be to get Ryan out on loan. Even if it weakened our goalkeeping options. It's a plausible scenario so how can you say Potter and Roberts fundamentally don't agree?

I've no idea about what happened with Ryan, and I'm not going down the road of hearsay, and just because it's a plausible scenario, it doesn't follow that it's the whole truth, nor that there's any truth.

However, what I DO know is that Roberts has always held Sanchez, Steele and Walton in very high regard. He had those first two sign for the club. The press box isn't a vacuum.

I'm not arguing that Sanchez isn't good enough. He looks very capable and did, to me at least, prior to making his premier league debut. It's the other two that concern me if they should, for whatever reason, find their way in to the first team.

Wouldn't you have said that before Sanchez made his debut? If not, great.

How do you know that Potter and Roberts aren't gambling that Sanchez won't get injured? After all, keeper injuries are fairly rare.

I've no idea about anyone 'gambling'? In Walton and Steele, Ben Roberts has 450 first team games' worth of experience to work with.

You do make a good case GT.

Never considered it but you’re right. We don’t seem to sell very well. The one exception being Knocky who I think we got decent value for.

I wonder if we were shopping these players out to a degree, which makes it hard to command a fee.

Good point but on the other hand if we sell them for a fee do we get to where we are today.

We could have sold Stephens, Duffy and Kayal at points but it would have been mad to at the time.

A lot on that list is a waste though.

How much do you think Bissouma , Lamptey, White, Webster, Connolly would be worth if we sold them ?

Whether he’s a good keeper or not, the previous poster said he assumed he’d acted like a dick to lose his place. I called this out

Yes fare thee well Maty.

As someone else has said; best keeper we've ever had (but Bobby Sanchez is better)

As good as he was can think of at least half a dozen others I have seen that were better .

Hope he does well though and makes the move permanent with a hefty transfer fee .

Yes, except WHEN Sanchez has a rough patch or injury. Or red card. They all do, so we can be sure of that. Maybe something's happening to provide stronger cover. Also, I hope that the support on here for Sanchez remains when he has a bad patch.
I see no cause to worry. If Sanchez gets injured, I think Walton will play. Actually, I think he was considered to be our no.2 - ahead of Sanchez - before he got injured against Chelsea. He's been unlucky in that Sanchez has grabbed his chance with both hands and now looks to have made the place his own.

You're right - there are some duds in there - but you can easily argue we got very decent value out of some of them:

Duffy - £4m - a snip really given we got 4 years of mostly great service out of him. Certainly one of the key reasons we got promoted.
Stephens - £1m (or thereabouts) - we got 7 seasons out of him, and then managed to get around £1m from Burnley for a 30-year old.
Kayal - £1m? (probably less) - we got 4 or 5 seasons out of him (two or three were excellent, and it would have been more but for injury). By the time we sold him he was over 30.

And Ryan himself has proved excellent value - £5m for three and a half years. He was great for at least two and a half years.

That in a nutshell is my point. I don't know and you don't know so you can't talk with anymore certainty than I can.

My opinion, based on what I've seen of Steele and Walton is that they're not premier league quality keepers. Sanchez, so far, is. Ryan, definitely is. Losing him from the gk stable leaves us in a precarious position, in my opinion, because two of our three keepers aren't, again in my opinion, premier league quality. They may have 470 first team games between them but none are at premier league level. Why might that be?

Yes, we did well with Knocky - and Ulloa, and going back a bit, Virgo - but they are very much the exception to the rule.

And therein lies my original point. I don't know, but I will take what I do know straight from the horse's mouth - i.e. the goalkeeping coach's point of view, which far outweighs yours or my point of view, and his view differs from yours.

Im a bit gutted. Gave everything for the team. He was found lacking a bit this season. But a huge mystery still around his falling down the pecking order.

Will always remember his Penalty save away at Stoke and loved his passion for the team and his lenghty runs up the pitch for our goals. Thought it was going to be tough to replace Stokedale but he took us to another level.

Really very concerned about Potter removing experience from our squad. We really are lacking now across all areas of the pitch.

Experience is good, but it has to be used. He was a player we needed to step up and look to when defending a lead, but it wasn't happening
