I’ve downgraded to a 4... I’d forgotten to take into account how annoying nsc is these days... indeed it’s been a hard season to express any kind of measured criticism in the face of such hyperbole.

A list of similar lows; failing to beat any of the bottom 3, our ‘performances’ against Sheff utd et al ... serve as ample justification for a balanced evaluation. We finished 16th not 6th... yes, like I said, we’ve undergone a few progressions but we are still someway off PL mediocrity.

How we can call 16th anything better than a 5 is beyond me. It’s an average score for an average season, one where we finished in our average position.

There is promise, but many things need to improve before it’s delivered.

Now, don’t get bent out of shape and make me downgrade to a 3, just chill out.

Lol.

Funny, its been exactly the same situation for us with a more positive outlook - you cant say anything positive without a bunch of moaners, like yourself, turning up to tell you about how wrong you are because the guys couldnt beat Sheffield etc.

Its as difficult to get away with measured praise as with measured critisism. Different sides of the same coin.

Personally in all social situations, I prefer talking with or reading the perspectives of positive people rather than the negative. But we're all different.

Either way its the same shit. Go back in the thread and you'll find equally many people moaning about people giving 7s (you being one of them) as people moaning about 5s.

Honestly - I thought I was being positive given our final position vs the expectation and promise of progression.

Ultimately we've stood still, but BOY have we done it with style. A bit like the cool kid at the side of the dance floor, who refuses to dance... he's worried about his hair, he's worried he'll sweat... he's worried someone will see through the facade... yep, he's just another average Joe trying to style out mediocrity as the new sliced bread in some Godforsaken nightclub which exists entirely in his head.

He's not even there. He got turned away at the door, his name wasn't down. As for his HUGE white trainers, well they just scream parody.

9/10. Because of very fine margins.

We didn't concede very many - but too high a proportion of those were crucial goals, by which I mean goals that instantly changed the outcome and cost us points - think Man.Utd. (that penalty!), Palace, Saints, Leicester. All goals against matter of course, but some less than others - if we conceded a couple against Newcastle, for instance, it wouldn't have made much difference to our season. Some crucial goals cost us dearly. Same as if we'd scored another half dozen against Leeds, for instance, they wouldn't have been crucial and wouldn't have affected our season.

Similarly at the other end, we didn't score enough, true - but just five more goals over the season, providing they were crucial goals, would have made a huge difference

So, five fewer goals conceded, and five more scored (at crucial moments) would have had us top ten, or as near as makes no difference. Five goals less conceded, and five more scored - that's how close we were to a top ten finish, so 9 out of 10 for me ....................

...............fine margins!

I'm amazed 7 is nearly 50% of the vote.
Making this and a couple of other 'see it wasn't all bad' threads odd to read.

The last 2 games absolutely typify the season, 10/10 followed by 0/10. (you know what I mean)

I just don't get where 7 comes from:-

Beating City losing to Sheffield Utd, 5/10.
Winning at half time dropping 25 points. 5/10
Best goal difference, horrific shot conversation rate. 5/10
Safe by mid March, 41 points end of season 5/10
The list is almost endless of positives and then it's negative.

It's not as if 5 is a bad mark.
Still a pass, but with plenty of room to improve into.

I just wish NSC was marking my O-Levels, I could have been a child genius. :lolol:

I voted 8. l've loved the style in which we have played this season, and I've never felt like we were in danger of the drop. Playing football that i could not have dreamed of 20 years ago.

Not sure why you glass half-full muppets one day go raging about bringing up your doomsday predictions because "why cant you just have opionions without having to face them later" only to next day finding a new subject to moan about, namely other peoples opinions about the season.

If only football was all statistics, results and numbers, we wouldn't have to bother watching the games! :)

87% have voted 6 - 8 /10.

But not everyone sees the "negatives" as 0/10!

6 max for me. Yes we played some pretty stuff and looked good against some of the top 6 but were horrendous with teams at the bottom end, couldn't manage games out when taking the lead all year long, and just were an utter joke in front of goal. Lot's of room for improvement.

We have a bottom 6 budget according to @El Pres, so finishing 17th is an expectation, par for the course.

So warranting a rating of say 5.5 on the poll's scale.

Except:
- In the majority of matches we've played attacking football, great approach play ... but obviously lacking a decent EPL striker.
- We were far better in the second half of the season - defence sorted, Sanchez has proven a quality keeper, Moder hit the ground running, the class of Lallana, beating CL teams. To me that's a big plus, a positive note to end on.

Hence bumping up the 5.5 to 7 for me.

What stops that being a 10, all the points raised in this thread: Unable to unlock a packed deep block, all the chances missed, a lack of wins against poor teams, overly cavalier/naive football giving away key goals eg Benteke and at Molyneux, dumb sending offs that hurt us.
