5 for me.
We have played some fantastic football on a regular basis but so so frustrating. For so many games you just knew we weren't going to convert the numerous chances we were creating (WBA away was a nadir for me) plus our tendency not to see games out. Some standout performers Biss, Dunk, Veltman, White and Lamptey early on but others Maupay, AJ, Connolly just aren't up to it.
Probably not being able to actually go to the matches meant a lower mark - watching on tv just doesn't do it for me

It has been so good to watch us really have a go against the top teams rather than damage limitation as in the past.

We just need to convert more chances and we will be mid table.

Especially impressed how we coped for a large chunk of the season without a recognised full back or wingback on either side.
If Lamptey and March had not been injured, who knows what we could have achieved.

I hope we get Karbownik playing at PL level (hoping he is good enough) and another left sided full back/ wingback plus do something about improving our conversion rate of shots v goals.

Things got better once we fixed the keeper situation but was awful at times leading up to that. The football wasn't always that good either. Round about when the Potter outs were starting to be heard.

Things got better though and the football improved again.

Frustrating season + saem points but lower finish means cant be more than a 5 for me.

Lose Bissouma then we have work to do to even tread water.

Yep. Because three really poor teams below us. The final table shows clear "mini leagues" with us second bottom of ours and Newcastle, in 12th at the top. Then there's a 10 point gap to sides who could have had a shot, however small, at Europe. Considering Newcastle were looking in danger before Wilson returned and Willock stepped up turning just a couple of the games against those in the bottom league into wins could have seen us where they are and a couple more on top pressuring Villa for bottom of the top group.

It's a stat that justifies the 5s and 6s IMO.

Yep. 17 wins between them, the same as 10th placed Everton managed by themselves. 71 collective defeats so everyone else seems to have managed.

- reduce the average age of the team
- provide a pathway for the youth
- improve the style of play
- stay in the league and build towards a top 10 finish

I’d say we’ve delivered on 3/4, plus I believe we’ve narrowed the gap on Palace, Newcastle, Wolves, Burnley and Southampton, improved our defence, recruited well. It’s a solid 8 from me.

I'd give us 5/10. I really don't think you can go much higher because ultimately we've finished on the same number of points and a place lower than last season. A season has to be judged as a season as a whole.

Positives
We've played better football
We've taken some of the biggest result in our history (City H, Liverpool A)
The development of youth and how the likes of Sanchez and White have looked since coming in
The above meaning we've been able to move on some of the older players such as Stephens and Duffy without seeing a drop-off in quality
We turned around a perilous looking position at New Year
We kicked Leeds' arse twice. Not that relevant to the season but I enjoyed it.

Negatives
We failed to beat any of the bottom 4 in 8 games this season
Once again we've been fortunate there's been three woeful teams taking up the relegation places
No quality, lead striker (still) - Maupay and Welbeck have done OK but needed support
Continually failing to manage a game through when winning toward the end (Palace, Wolves, Leicester in the cup etc.)

Can't really agree with this one, we got 41 points without beating any of the bottom 4, that would've kept us up in the vast majority of PL seasons.

Another team could've finished on 29 points and been safe this season. We didn't stay up because those teams are rubbish, especially as we didn't get very many points from them!

This seems a great example of glass half full. Totally forgetting the brilliant bits for the sake of being bloody miserable. I take it that you were only dancing around your house with glee at one or two of these brilliant ‘ups’?

- Beating Spurs at home.
- Double against Leeds
- Double against Newcastle
- Wiping the smile off Grealish’s face at Villa park.
- Beating Liverpool at Anfield
- Beating EPL and probably CL champions at the Amex last week.
- Joint record EPL points total.
- Development of top class young players like Lamptey, White & Sanchez.

I’ve downgraded to a 4... I’d forgotten to take into account how annoying nsc is these days... indeed it’s been a hard season to express any kind of measured criticism in the face of such hyperbole.

A list of similar lows; failing to beat any of the bottom 3, our ‘performances’ against Sheff utd et al ... serve as ample justification for a balanced evaluation. We finished 16th not 6th... yes, like I said, we’ve undergone a few progressions but we are still someway off PL mediocrity.

How we can call 16th anything better than a 5 is beyond me. It’s an average score for an average season, one where we finished in our average position.

There is promise, but many things need to improve before it’s delivered.

Now, don’t get bent out of shape and make me downgrade to a 3, just chill out.

I guess everyone weights the various factors in different ways. If you're simply focused on league placing and largely ignoring everything else that's happening in and around the club then 5/6 is probably about right as comfortably avoiding relegation would be at the lower end of expectations. Would be fascinated to see what Tony would score it out of 10.

I don’t disagree with the entirety of your post but have nevertheless scored a 6. Lots of highs and lows this season and it seems to come down to how an individual weights those feelings. There are certainly a number of people who see any criticism as dissent to be wiped out but all the same I don’t think the season’s undoubted frustrations should overwhelm the positive factors such as playing style and unexpected wins against the big boys. I suspect most (including me) would have been a lot happier if we had been attending games. Armchair football is rubbish by comparison.

I was so close to giving us a 7/10, but for me the season has had it's ups and downs. At the half-way point it felt more like a 4 out of 10 and I had deep concerns were were headed in the wrong direction. But, this season has been a season of two halves, just as many games we've played have been so different either before or after the break.

Pluses are definitely hanging onto the players we wanted and showing some depth when Solly and Tariq were injured.

The emergence of Bob Sanchez just as Ryan disappeared off the field was plus.

Maupay's passion for the fight was excellent, but not matched by goals and sadly I just don't think we can afford to keep letting Connolly learn his way on our pitch - we need to discover an answer. Ali J has played better towards the end, but unless he is about to become a successor to Gros I don't see him fitting in. Clearly Andone is not going to get game time, so get rid and Percy is not the answer. So our forward options are all over the place.

Moder's arrival is very exciting. I think he will be great next season.

And Bissouma and Lallana are fabulous. I just wish that one was staying and the other was younger.

So, loads to be positive about and lots to be concerned about, but hey, that's football. I've never known a season where it has been just right. Even the promotion seasons.
